It was a close call at the top of the standings in Round 5 of the SB Sports Injuries Series as Dan Watts took a narrow win from Matt Gibbons on a glorious evening. Watts coped best with newly laid chippings adding an extra dimension to Wrekinsport’s Hanna Phipps-Jones event, taking place after a late course selection over two laps of the lumpy Shawbirch – Cotwall Bank circuit to stop the watch on 43 minutes and 5 seconds ahead of a field of 33 riders. This moved Watts up to 4th in the Overall standings. A delighted Watts commented: “A difficult circuit to find a rhythm on, I rode the first lap too slow had to play catch up on the second lap. Matt pushed me for the win but I was pleased to come away with the victory“.

Gibbons was just 13 seconds back on Watts on 43:18, pushing Watts all the way in a tough contest featuring some quality with the Top 5 split by just 71 seconds. Nova Raider Gibbons has put in some strong performances already this year, and he made the most of the sunshine and minimal winds to put in a great ride. He stated: “I felt strong and gave it a good go, but well done to Dan on the win. Thanks also to Wrekinsport for a good event“.

In the Veterans Series Stuart Proctor took the win to move up to equal 4th in the Veterans standings with a fine +7:14, 53 seconds ahead of another Nova Raider Tim Beardmore on standard. This was good enough for 4th overall on the night in 44:07, just seven seconds behind Alex Leek but just 9 ahead of Beardmore on actual. Proctor was pleased with his efforts, commenting: “I really enjoyed the race, the conditions obviously helped, it was such a still night! I coped OK with the new ‘pavé section’, but managed to get cramp coming out of Longdon On Tern on the second lap, so I took it a little easier though still managed a sprint over the line“.

It was a two-way battle in the Women’s with Wrekinsport’s Emma Robinson taking a narrow 11 second victory over Jenny Newton. Newton had been ahead at the end of the first lap by 22 seconds but Robinson piled on the pressure in Lap 2 to cross the line in 52:36. Despite this Newton moved up to the top of the Women’s standings on the strength of this ride. Robinson commented: “It was good conditions and nice to be racing in the warm. I found it challenging doing the two laps, but enjoyed it“.

Newton wasn’t the only rider taking over the lead of a series as Revolutions Racing’s Sam Morris flew around the circuit in 44:39 – good enough for 7th overall. The 17 year-old put his light weight to advantage to storm up the climbs and set a 12 point lead in the Junior Series as  a result.

Wrekinsport’s riders were also competing for the Hanna Phipps-Jones trophy, awarded on handicap to best improver. Taking the Gold  by a huge margin was Vince Evans, who clearly showed the form he has picked up over the winter with an adjusted 35:28. Getting closest to Evans was Alistair Hatton, with a handicap time of 41:37.
