SB Sports Injuries Shropshire Championship 50 presented by Mid Shropshire Wheelers

The first County cycling medals of the season found their destination in the SB Sports Injuries Shropshire Championship 50 presented by Mid Shropshire Wheelers, round 6 of the Friction Hydraulics Series. Leading the way home was the promoting club’s Victor Chetta, who has expressed a variety of issues with both position and fitness over the early season. But here Chetta made no mistake, recording a great effort of 1 hour 57 minutes 13 seconds to take Gold over four laps of the Prees – Tilstock circuit. Chetta was the only County rider to top 25mph, beating Hafren CC’s Bryn Davies into Silver with a fine ride of 2:00:55. Chetta was reserved with his comments, merely stating: “I’m still struggling with my form, but think things are starting to turn around”.

Davies was much more effusive despite being nervous at stepping up to the distance for the first time. That inexperience proved costly as Davies learnt how to cope with the challenge: “This was my first 50, I was pleased with the result although a little disappointed not to get under the 2 hour mark – I took it a little too easy on the first lap! A great course, and although I was a little apprehensive about the distance I found I enjoyed it. Thanks to Mid Shropshire Wheelers for a very well run event”.

Davies wasn’t the only one trying his beginner’s luck, with Stuart Proctor not just winning one medal but two in his first attempt at the distance. Proctor wasn’t far off Davies’ pace in 2:01:18, beating North Shropshire Wheelers’ Richard Kay to overall Bronze by just 19 seconds; but when a late recalculation revealed he’d also won Veteran’s Gold too with +18:42 his reaction was “Fantastic news! It was really tough out there for my first 50, not helped by a failing power meter battery! A great course and weather to start, but the wind definitely picked up on the Wem road on the last two laps with some hairy gusts at times. Many thanks Mid Shropshire Wheelers for organising and marshalling”.

Proctor is homing in on the top of the Veteran’s standings, now just 35 points behind leader Bryn Davies, but he wasn’t the only one to put pressure on the Hafren rider with Pauline Hughes taking the Veteran’s runner-up spot to consolidate her second place in the table and win Silver with +18:10. But Hughes wasn’t finished there, making it a brace after taking the runner’s-up spot in the Women’s 50 Championship too with a fine 2:15:02 on actual. This stretched her lead at the top of the Women’s series to a comfortable 70 points. Hughes stated: “I was super happy with my performance. That was only my second 50 mile time trial and a huge improvement with a new personal best. I really enjoyed course and a lovely event – thank you Mid Shropshire Wheelers“.

But Hughes saw off David Wilson in the Veterans, with the North Shropshire Wheeler settling for Bronze; whilst she did the same to Jenny York in the Women’s after York stopped the watch on 2:19:49. Hughes didn’t have it all her own way in the Women’s thanks to the presence of the National Mixed Tandem competition record holder at the distance – Becky Lewis. Lewis posted a fabulous effort of 2:03:24 to take Women’s Gold – good enough for 6th spot overall – as well as helping Mid Shropshire Wheelers to Team Gold, based on the fastest three riders. Lewis was delighted with her efforts, stating: “We were fortunate with the weather, and the event was extremely well marshalled and organised. It’s a tough circuit, but I think I paced it well. Very pleased“!

Chetta and Lewis were joined by Ian Hobley to register a combined 6:11:53 to see off the challenge of Revolutions Racing back in 6:24:55 – a big margin of victory. This also gained Mid Shropshire Wheelers big points in the Top Club Award as they narrowed the gap at the top of the table to Nova Raiders by 80 points. Hobley commented: “Congratulations to Victor and Becky. I felt it was a poor ride by me, but happy to count for the team. Organisation and Marshals were brilliant“.

Juniors are a rare sight at the longer standard distances, so with Sam Morris not only racing his first attempt at a 50 but taking 8th spot overall in 2:08:35 that Junior Gold was well deserved. The most recent entry was from Tom Garbett in 2014 so Morris was joining illustrious company. He was delighted with his effort, stating: “My first 50 – definitely another step up from a 25! My pacing was not quite right, but happy for a first go. I really liked the course, nice and varied”.
