The course record was shattered as Kirk Vickers lopped 46 seconds off Tyler Brennan’s old standard to become the first rider to dip below the 20 minute mark on the Berriew – Welshpool course and take Gold and The Gordon Davies Trophy in The Coaching Revolutions Shropshire Championship 10 presented by Hafren CC. Vickers fought against a howling head wind which blighted the return leg in Round 13 of the Friction Hydraulics Series to record a fantastic effort of 19 minutes 57 seconds, just a sniff over a 30mph average.

The SCCA Private Member knew he had been in a race after flying out to the turn and having to dig deep to return to Berriew: “I can speak for everyone how horrible that headwind was. I was pleased with the win after battling hard in the final mile to get under 20 minutes. Well done all, a great event“.

Vickers beat Dan Watts into the Silver medal position despite him having two previous wins in the Series. Watts paid for overexerting himself in the earlier part of the race, hanging on to register 20:34. His comments back up Vickers’ thoughts and revealed the suffering he put himself through: “Kirk Vickers describing the head wind as ‘horrible’ is an understatement. Being so fast to the turn I got a little over excited and went a bit too deep, and by Mile Seven I paid for it by grovelling to the finish line. I was pleased with the time in the end, but it was always going to be a hard task beating Kirk especially when he lays down a sub-20“.

Neither of these riders had previous experience of this course in it’s 10 mile iteration but Hafren CC’s Bryn Davies had, and put that experience to superb use to take home three medals: Overall Bronze, Veteran’s Gold and Team Gold; as well as extend his lead in both the Friction Series and the Friction Veteran’s Series. Well aware of the course from Hafren CC club events Davies pushed out Ludlow Brewery RT rider Jacob Sparrow to capture Overall Bronze by just three seconds with a fine 21:09. Davies led Hafren CC to Team Gold with excellent support from Tyler Brennan, 5th in 21:38 and Ian Nisbett, 9th in 22:13 for a combined 1:05:00 and beat off the attentions of Andy Hazell in the Veteran’s by 39 seconds to take a further Gold in +5:14.

A delighted Davies commented: “I was pleased to get Veterans and Team Gold. A good showing from Tyler and Ian, Tyler is definitely one to watch for the future! I’m happy enough with my result, I was trying to get under the 21 but it was hard work coming back against that headwind. Fantastic effort by Dan with his time, but hats off to Kirk for an amazing time in those conditions. Well done all, and a big thanks to my club Hafren CC for putting on a great event – great work guys“!

Former course record holder Brennan enjoyed his evening out and the atmosphere of a Championship 10, adding: “It was awesome! We all rode well, though it wasn’t my best effort this year I was pretty pleased with it“. SB Series winner Ian Nisbett meanwhile was suffering in the team cause with a self-confessed tailing off of form after pushing himself hard to take that Series: “I’m knackered and really need a break! It was a case of getting round without embarrassing myself and trying to record a decent time. A tough evening with the headwind, I just about hung in and did enough. I’m very pleased to get Team Gold – kudos to Bryn and Tyler for setting fast times“.

There was some tough competition on show in the Women’s Championship with Charlotte Chapman putting experience of the Hafren 25 mile course which utilises the same stretch of the A483 to good use to take Women’s Gold and The Gordon Davies Women’s Trophy in a fine time of 23:25. The Nova Raider beat Hafren CC’s Emma Serjeant into the Silver medal position by 58 seconds, with Chapman’s team mate Deb Hutson-Lumb taking home a brace of Bronze medals after finishing third in both Women’s and Veteran’s Championships with an actual 24:44 and Veteran Standard +4:25, just 10 seconds behind another Raider, Hazell who was surprised with Veteran’s Silver, commenting: “I thought I was pretty slow, so I was pleased to get Veteran’s Silver! Congratulations to Bryn, Charlotte and Kirk and the other prize winners“.

Chapman was delighted with the medal haul for her club stating: “It was a tough night in that wind, but I’m over the moon to take the Ladies Gold. Well done to Deb and Andy for their medals and the rest of Nova for being super strong as per – proud to be a part of it all! A greatly run event and great cake too“!

Serjeant meanwhile was another rider putting home advantage to good use and was happy to record 24:23: “On home territory. I was pleased with my time considering the headwind on the return leg. Well done to Charlotte on Gold. Thank you to Hafren CC for organising and for  the encouragement on the Tesco roundabout“!

After a fair time away from the sport Hutson-Lumb has made an immediate impact and was satisfied to go home with a brace of medals despite her time being down on Round 12: “I was really pleased to bag two Bronze medals in my first season back doing time trials.  A bit disappointed with my time as after a good ride on the Oswestry 10 a couple of weeks ago I’d hoped to squeeze in under 24 minutes. I found it a hard ride with my heart rate way in the red, and I wasn’t helped by a bit of drag from the back brake! An excellent event, as always, and my thanks to everyone involved, in particular the marshals on the Tesco turn who helped me get through the confusion of vehicles. Congratulations to all the medal winners and a big well done to everyone taking part“.

But the medals weren’t finished there with some stiff competition in the Junior 10 Championship seeing Kieran Morris take Junior Gold and The Alan Roberts Junior Trophy with a fabulous 22:06 – good enough for 8th Overall. Morris also extended his lead in the Friction Junior Series but his ride wasn’t without it’s issues: “I was pleased to get the win. I had an eventful evening, I only had the bike an hour before the start and still not set up quite right. Then a dog ran out in front off me and I got stopped at the roundabout. I love this course. Going out to island I was averaging over 30mph all the way there. Then that wind coming back was a tester. The marshals were fabulous as always. Well done to all the riders some fast times“.

50 seconds back from Morris secured Hafren CC’s Sam Holwill Junior Silver. He was pleased with his ride given the tough conditions: “I was happy to get under 23 minutes especially as there was a headwind on the way back. Nice to get Silver on my home course“. Meanwhile Revolutions Racing’s Henri Bedford took Bronze in 24:17. He added: “I enjoyed the course but found it hard in the wind. I look forward to having another go in calmer conditions“.
