It is important to note that events are organized by the Promoting Club shown the race calendars. Although in some cases this is the Shropshire Cycling Clubs Association, SCCA is not the event organizer or promotor unless specifically identified. The SCCA takes points awarded by the organizing club for individual riders who qualify for SCCA season long competition and creates a league table based on these points. This allows Association member clubs to provide County Level racing for their members.

SB Sports Injuries Series – how to win

Based on a range of Association and solo club events promoted by member clubs, the SB Sports Injuries Series is an Inter-club Series designed to give riders a taste of competition against riders from other clubs, where they are assured a warm welcome to step up from competing in just their own club’s 10 mile event. The series acts as a bridge to entering Open events, with a simple entry-on-the-line format and some longer distance as well as some sporting courses designed to enrich the time trialling experience.

All riders from SCCA member clubs automatically qualify for points, whilst Shropshire-based riders of non-affiliated clubs can also join in by taking out private SCCA membership. For 2020 there are 17 rounds, with bonus points awarded for longer events to encourage riders to stretch themselves. Points from a rider’s highest scoring 12 rounds count towards cumulative positions in each category, with separate points awarded over four categories:

  • Overall
  • Veterans on Standard – for over-40 riders, based on how much a target time is beaten (or missed) by. Standards become more generous with age
  • Women’s
  • Juniors – 12-18 year olds (18 year olds are classed as Juniors for the calendar year their 18th birthday falls in)

It is thus possible for a rider to meet the criteria to be ranked for different points in as many as three categories. Gold, Silver and Bronze County medals are awarded in each category, with the winners also holding an annual trophy each.

Points are awarded as follows:

  • Standard: 20 points for a win, 18 points for second down to 2 points for finishing
  • 25-29 miles: 26 points for a win, 24 for second down to 4 points for finishing
  • 30 miles and over: 30 points for a win, 28 for second down to 6 points for finishing

A tie results in both (or all) tied riders being awarded the higher points, so for instance two riders tying for runner-up spot in a 10 mile event: both receive 18 points.

Non-affiliated riders are welcome to compete, although they will not qualify for points.

UK ICT 2 Up Series – how to win

The 2-Up format is tremendous fun and this Series has proved both very popular and highly competitive in previous years. All events take place over 10 miles, with riders encouraging each other on and switching places at regular intervals. Riders attempting the format for the first time are often surprised at how fast they are compared to their solo time. This is due to the drafting effect when sitting behind another rider and riders bringing the best of efforts out of each other.

All pairs from SCCA member clubs automatically qualify for points, whilst Shropshire-based riders of non-affiliated clubs can also join in by taking out private SCCA membership. For 2020 there are 9 rounds. Points awarded from a pair’s highest scoring 5 rounds from the Series count towards the cumulative positions in each category; which must be gained with the same partner to accumulate. If a rider competes with a separate partner that is treated as a separate set of points, with points awarded over three categories:

  • Overall
  • Women’s
  • Mixed Team

Points are awarded in each category as follows:

  • 20 points for a win, 18 points for second down to 2 points for finishing

Gold, Silver and Bronze County medals are awarded in each category, with the winners also holding a matching pair of annual trophies each.

A tie results in both (or all) tied teams being awarded the higher points, so for instance two teams tying for runner-up spot: both receive 18 points.

Non-affiliated riders are welcome to compete, although they will not qualify for points. If a team includes one affiliated and one non-affiliated rider they will not qualify for points. Pairs do not have to belong to the same club, but will gain points as long as both riders are affiliated.

Note that from 2020 a fixed or flashing red rear light is COMPULSORY for both riders when starting: no light, no ride due to need to comply with insurance conditions.

Hill Climb Series – how to win

The Hill Climb Series is particularly suitable for mountain goats and is particularly suitable for Junior riders, whose light weight is a distinct advantage. Short, sharp and with as many different characteristics as you could shake a stick at, some climbs will be constant efforts, others you’ll be changing gear almost continually. Traditionally taking place as the racing season winds down between the end of August and early October, several events take place on consecutive days which is an additional challenge.

In this format you will not receive a ‘push’ start, the pusher-off will merely let go. Riders stopping on the climb and putting their foot down are technically DNF – Did Not Finish. Because of the small distances involved and potential for ties finish timekeepers are recommended to time hill climbs to at least tenths of a second, although this is not universally followed.

All riders from SCCA member clubs automatically qualify for points, whilst Shropshire-based riders of non-affiliated clubs can also join in by taking out private SCCA membership. For 2020 there are 9 rounds. Points from a rider’s highest scoring 5 rounds count towards cumulative positions in each category, with separate points awarded over four categories:

  • Overall
  • Veterans on Actual Time – for over-40 riders
  • Women’s
  • Juniors – 12-18 year olds (18 year olds are classed as Juniors for the calendar year their 18th birthday falls in)

Points are awarded in each category as follows:

  • 20 points for a win, 18 points for second down to 2 points for finishing

Non-affiliated riders are welcome to compete, although they will not qualify for points.

Friction and Hydraulics Series – how to win

The Friction and Hydraulics Series pulls together all solo Open events run by the Association and its member clubs taking place in and around Shropshire. Open events have stricter entry conditions than club events, requiring pre-entry 11-12 days prior to the event at the latest. They often attract riders from outside the County and so the standard is usually higher, and it’s here that you’ll find the longest time trialling distances. Depending on organiser preference entry may be either online via the CTT website, or by post via a paper entry form, also available on the CTT website under the ‘Forms’ dropdown. Clothing regulations are stricter than for club 10’s, so if you are new to Opens a word with an experienced time trialling club mate who will know the regulations is recommended.

The field will normally be seeded, with a formal start sheet and result sheet issued. There’s usually prize money for the best riders in a variety of categories set out by club or organiser preference. The traditional format places the fastest riders on ‘0’ and ‘5’ numbers, whilst the ‘Championship’ format seeds riders from slowest to fastest based upon stated previous best performance over the previous three seasons. An HQ is almost always used, often a village hall or similar, with a good social gathering afterwards for tea and cakes.

It is thus possible for a rider to meet the criteria to be ranked for different points in as many as three categories. Gold, Silver and Bronze County medals are awarded in each category, with the winners also holding an annual trophy each.

Points are awarded as follows:

  • Standard: 60 points for a win, 55 points for second down to 5 points for finishing
  • 50 miles: 70 points for a win, 65 for second down to 10 points for finishing
  • 100 miles: 80 points for a win, 75 for second down to 15 points for finishing

The Series also incorporates the Top Club Award, with all points from all rounds gained via the Overall category counting towards each club’s tally. The competition for this award is hot, and whilst the fastest riders often contribute big points every rider can assist their club’s cumulative score. For this purpose only points won by private members are excluded.

Four of the events are County Championships at the ‘Standard’ distances of 10, 25, 50 and 100 miles, and additional Championship medals are awarded in the same categories shown above for these major events.

A tie results in both (or all) tied riders being awarded the higher points, so for instance two riders tying for runner-up spot in a 10 mile event: both receive 55 points.

Shropshire Best all Rounder – how to win

The Best all Rounder (BAR) is a traditional cycling competition based upon season-long competition over ‘Standard’ distance events (10, 25, 50 and 100 miles), and is based upon speed. Four different BARs are available to win, which are:

The ‘Standard’ distances used vary depending on which category you are entering, with the counting event list compiled from any Open event being run at ‘Standard’ distances promoted by SCCA clubs, as well as those put on by non-SCCA clubs that are at least partially in Shropshire. To qualify for a BAR competition you need to ride at least one event at each distance from the qualifying list, with the times (or Veteran’s standards) added together. It is your best time (or standard) at the distance that is counted, and there is no restriction on how many you enter throughout the racing season in an attempt to improve. The distances required and how to win in each category are as follows:

  • Overall: lowest combined time in qualifying events over 100, 50 and 25 miles
  • Veterans: highest combined Veteran’s Standard in qualifying events over 100, 50 and 25 miles
  • Women’s: lowest combined time in qualifying events over 50, 25 and 10 miles
  • Juniors: lowest combined time in qualifying events over 25 and 10 miles

It is thus possible for a rider to meet the criteria to be competitive in as many as three categories. Gold, Silver and Bronze County medals are awarded in each category, with the winners also holding an annual trophy each.

Example: A rider entering the Overall BAR records best times as follows:

  • 100 miles:                  3:46:20
  • 50 miles:                    1:57:32
  • 25 miles:                    0:57:52

BAR qualifying time:     6:41:44 All riders from SCCA member clubs qualify automatically for the Shropshire BARs where they meet the entry criteria for the category and have completed at least one event at every distance required in that BAR, whilst Shropshire-based riders of non-affiliated clubs can also join in by taking out private SCCA membership
