Bryn Davies piled on the pressure with another double table-topping ride in Round 4 of the SB Sports Injuries Series. The Hafren CC rider took both Overall and Veteran’s honours in the third SCCA Spring 10 at Waters Upton ahead of 42 other solo riders, coping best with the strong headwind on the ‘out’ leg to Hodnet that sapped the strength of many. Davies flew home in 21 minutes 57 seconds for a 16 second victory over Nova Raiders’ Matt Gibbons, stretching his Series lead to a commanding 22 points in the process.

Meanwhile in the Veteran’s competition Davies is slowly pulling away from another Nova Raider, Scott Harris, who finished second Veteran in +3:41 behind Davies’ +4:16. Harris, who was also third on actual in 22:46 in what is a strong opening to his season has a 10 point gap to make up on Davies, who revealed a short break had affected his performance, stating: “It was tough out, I pushed hard with the hope of an easier return but started running out of steam towards the end. I’m pleased considering I’d had a few days R&R in Barcelona beforehand“.

Gibbons was delighted with his performance, especially considering racing was a late call, commenting: “It was all a bit last minute and thrown together for me but I was glad I made it. Nice to race with as many Raiders“. With five riders in the Top 10 Nova Raiders are certainly bringing strength in depth this year, with Harris echoing Gibbons’ comments: “It’s good to see so many Raiders taking part and doing well. I enjoyed the race, pushed hard to the island and enjoyed the tailwind on the return. Happy with my ride“.

In the Women’s Series Pauline Hughes took over at the top of the standings thanks to a winning effort of 25:39. The Revolutions Racing rider saw off a challenge from Wrekinsport’s Emma Robinson, runner-up in 27:01. Hughes opened up a 16 point lead with a strong rider evidenced by her also finishing third in the Veterans’ Series on +3:35. She commented: “I quite enjoyed the challenge of the strong outward head wind! I was pleased with Women’s win, and it was a nice surprise to be 3rd Veteran. A lovely atmosphere, and I enjoyed a good catch up at the end“. Hughes’ comments point out one of the features of using this course with Ellerdine Village Hall committee making rider most welcome with tea and cakes in a great social atmosphere.

In the Junior Series it was good to see four Under-18’s in competition all enjoying their afternoon. Mid Shropshire Wheelers’ Kieran Morris took the win in a fabulous time of 24:15 – good enough for 11th spot Overall – with team mate Ben Pierce 23 seconds back. Morris revealed he could have done still better stating: “I had a bit of a disaster and had to stop for a mechanical. My first time trial of the year as I’ve been focussing on Criteriums this year, but strangely enjoyed it. Thanks to the organising team, the marshals and well done to everyone who rode“. Pierce added: “I was pleased with my time, especially as it was quite windy”. But it was another young Mid Shropshire wheeler who had something to celebrate as 13 year-old Jack Young battled through the wind in 26:55 to take over the lead at the top of the Junior Series with a six point advantage over Hafren CC’s Tyler Brennan.
