Ian Nisbett proved to be a surprise package in the opening round of the SB Sports Injuries Series as his first visit to the Waters Upton – Hodnet course produced a win. The Hafren CC rider stopped the watch on 22 minutes 21 seconds in the first SCCA Spring 10 to see off some strong competition amongst the 32-strong field, also heading up the Veterans standings with an excellent +4:02.

Nisbett commented: “It was my first time on that course so I didn’t know the road at all. I struggled to hold the pace on the really rough tarmac areas at Peplow on the run to the turn, but overall I was pleased with the time despite losing a few seconds in traffic. It was nice to get the Veterans win too – although it was close! I probably went out a bit too fast but just about managed to hold on and post a steady effort all round. As ever, a big thanks to the organisers and the marshals who did a great job“.

Nisbett’s major challenge came from Ludlow Brewery RT rider Steve Minton, who headed up a welcome contingent of three of the club’s riders travelling from the south of the county. He took both Overall runner-up spot in 22:38 but was much closer in the age-related Veteran’s race, just four seconds off Nisbett’s pace. He stated: “It was the first time trial of the year for me. It’s always tough to measure the effort, but I should have gone deeper on the return. Thanks to all the marshals and helpers“.

It was a close call for third place with a solitary second splitting Nova Raiders’ Scott Harris from visiting Graham Weigh RT rider James Bell. Harris was also finding his time trial legs, crossing the line in 23:03 and taking the same familiar third spot in the Veterans Series with +3:29. Harris was pleased with his effort despite the shock to the system, commenting: “I was happy with the result, my first race for a while but good to be back racing. Thanks to all the marshals and timekeepers for doing a brilliant job as always“.

In the Junior Series it was close between 14 year-old Jack Young and 16 year-old Hollie Owens as the pair were separated by just six seconds – with Young posting a personal best 25:21 to take the win. The youngster was delighted with his efforts and judging by his determined charge for the finish line is clearly in fine early season form, stating: “I felt good, and was happy to get another personal best“.

Owens wasn’t finished there however as she took the win in the Women’s Series with another season debut performance, ending her afternoon on 25:27. She stated: “It was windy going out but my legs felt good. I was pleased to win my first time trial of the season“. Helen Tudor took an early lead in the Series with a good effort of 26:48, pushing out Nova Raiders’ Jenny Newton by 37 seconds. Tudor added: “I enjoyed it, it was nice to see a bit of warmer weather. Thanks to Wrekinsport CC for putting the event on, and Ellerdine Village Hall for making us welcome again“.
