Mid Shropshire Wheelers 25

It was a close call at the top of the leader board in Round 3 of the Friction Hydraulics Series, the Mid Shropshire Wheelers 25 at Prees as Matt Gibbons and Victor Chetta saw their times finish just three seconds apart. 2017 Silver medallist Chetta was beaten by the Series leader Gibbons as the Nova Raider stretched his lead at the top of the standings – despite having tired legs from the previous day’s Round 2.

Gibbons stopped the clock on 57 minutes 36 seconds despite less than ideal chilly conditions tempered further by a steady north wind. He now holds a fine 50 point lead at the top of the Series from Alex Leek, who finished 4th on the day in 59:30, one of only four riders to beat the hour in the tough conditions with Hafren CC’s Ian Nisbett 3rd in 58:53.

Gibbons was delighted with his performance so soon after the demanding Chris Edwards Hilly 18 promoted by Wrekinsport CC, commenting: “The races couldn’t have gone better, although it was very close with Victor. My legs were feeling it on the way back from Tern Hill and I thoroughly enjoyed my Easter egg in the afternoon! The marshals deserve a mention as there were plenty of them stood in the wet and cold, thank you“.

Chetta was making his debut in the 2018 Series and struggled a little as the shock of a new season took it’s toll: “I couldn’t really get into a rhythm, but a useful way of starting my season as it showed me a few things I need to work on before my big races start next month. A well organised and marshalled event by Mid Shropshire Wheelers as usual“. Despite missing out on the overall top spot the SCCA Private Member took the win in the Veteran’s Series by just 11 seconds from Nisbett after posting an excellent +8:21, with North Shropshire Wheelers’ David Wilson 3rd Veterans in +7:11. Exactly two minutes back from Wilson Ludlow CC’s William Baugh did enough to maintain his Veteran’s Series lead, stretching it to 45 points with Wilson moving up to second.

Prior to the race Hafren CC’s Rebecca Richardson was tying for the lead in the Friction Women’s Series with team mate Emma Serjeant, but took the opportunity to move into sole control thanks to a fabulous winning time of 1:04:38 – good enough for 10th spot overall showing the strength of her effort with Nova Raiders’ Jenny Newton Women’s runner-up in 1:11:47. Richardson’s win didn’t come without personal sacrifice however as she revealed: “I was very tired having raced the two previous days, in fact I felt physically sick at mile 22. I was pleased to contribute to the Hafren CC points! Very encouraging marshals and well organised, thanks“.

The inaugural entry in the 2018 Friction Junior Series saw Mid Shropshire Wheelers’ Jack Young step up to the distance for the first time ever – and post a very respectable 1:07:56 despite a little initial trepidation. He stated: “It went better than I thought it would, I really enjoyed it. I think I judged my ride well“.

With Gibbons backed up by solid performances from Ed Middleton, 5th in 1:01:13 and Nick Long, 6th in 1:01:38 Nova Raiders stretched their defence of the Top Club Award into an early 145 point lead.
