SCCA Autumn 10 No.2

The destination of the SB Sports Injuries Series goes down to the wire as Chris Halford and Dan Watts have to duke it out in the final event as things remained unresolved after Round 16, the SCCA’s second Autumn 10. Watts is making a late challenge for the Series with Halford taking the win on the day in tough conditions at Waters Upton with a number of very strong riders in competition. A brisk crosswind ensured that riders got no respite in either direction with Wrekinsport’s Halford stopping the watch on 20 minutes 51 seconds, 12 seconds down on his previous week’s effort as he battled the chilly conditions to come home at the front of a 29-strong field.

Halford stated: “I found it really tough, it felt hard in both directions. My power was good and I used a shallow wheel which helped“. Already having the SB Veterans Championship in his palmarès Halford showed what a worthy champion he is by taking the win in this Series too with a fine Standard of +5:45, 50 seconds ahead of runner-up Tim Beardmore.

Watts meanwhile finished 25 seconds behind Halford to add a further 18 points to his tally despite suffering in conditions which saw him finish 30 seconds off his Round 15 effort. This was Watts’ 11th event in the Series, and with the best 12 counting he is coming up on the rails in an attempt to snatch victory right at the death.

There was the all too rare sight of long-distance specialist Victor Chetta entering a 10 mile time trial due to hastily having to rearrange his plans due to a event cancellation in his first appearance of the SB Series. Despite the distance not being to Chetta’s liking it didn’t stop him putting in a shift to cross the finish line in 21:35, 6 seconds ahead of Beardmore. He explained: “I rode this at the last minute after a fast 50 in Hampshire was cancelled. I decided to use it as a 20 minute power test and hang on until end. The wind was less than expected, but an impressive ride by Chris to take the win“.

Whilst Chetta didn’t suffer as much in conditions Beardmore did and he paid for his strong ride as he revealed: “The blustery conditions made for a tough ride, and I struggled to settle into a rhythm. I emptied the tank on the return leg but died in the last half mile when the headwind seemed to pick up. A great time by Chris Halford for the win. Well done to everyone who took part, and a big thanks to the volunteers who made it happen“.

With Halford and Watts engaged in a race for the Championship the Bronze medal was sealed by the reigning SB Champion Ian Nisbett, whose post-race comments show just how much the level of competition has ramped up in 2019: “Unfortunately I didn’t get to complete the full scoring compliment of 12 races, but I wouldn’t have caught Dan or Chris anyway as they’ve been consistently fast all season – so congratulations to them. I’m happy to finish in the Top 3 for both Overall and Veterans and have enjoyed the close competition over the season“.

There was a great battle in the Women’s race as Louise Hurdley and Helen Tudor couldn’t be separated on 26:30 for first place – and that was enough to seal the SB Women’s Championship for Hurdley who has battled doggedly throughout the season for this title, missing just one round in the process. The 20 points added were enough to mean that Alison Dockney couldn’t overhaul the Hafren CC rider who has made it her goal to take this title in 2019: “It was a tough race with a strong wind to contend with so I was really pleased to get the joint win. I was also really pleased to secure first place in the Series, some great competition in the women’s, well done to Alison on getting Silver“.

Dockney was generous with her post-race comments and was more than satisfied with taking the Silver medal: “I’m absolutely thrilled with the Silver medal after a busy season racing. Congratulations to Louise for the win and thanks to all who took part for excellent competition, camaraderie and support. A big thank you to all clubs who hosted races, to marshals, timekeepers, and organisers“.

Tudor also suffered in conditions, and is now within touching distance of the Bronze medal which remains in play for the final round as a result of her ride. She stated: “A tough day, nearly half a minute down on the previous week despite better power but at least it stayed dry. Well done to Louise on the Series win, and thanks to all the marshals and timekeepers“.

In the Junior Series Henri Bedford already has the title wrapped up for the second year running and after setting a course personal best in Round 15 did it again in Round 16, knocking four seconds off his benchmark to cross the line in 21:53. This saw the 15 year-old Revolutions Racing rider take 5th spot overall and is all the more impressive given the harshness of conditions. Bedford stated: “I’m chuffed with shaving a little more of my course PB and with my overall placing. The wind was a bit challenging but at least the rain held off. Thank you to the marshals, and well done to Chris for his win and to all who rode“.

Attention wasn’t just on the Junior Champion but on an intriguing head-to-head between Mid Shropshire Wheelers’ Jack Young and Evolve’s George Coombes who are looking to seal the Junior Silver and Bronze medals. In the end Young stretched his advantage in the Silver medal position after a fine effort of 23:50, a huge improvement of 51 seconds over his Round 15 time with Coombes ending his afternoon on 25:08. Young stated: “Much better than the week before, I was pleased with my time“.
