SCCA Autumn 10 No.3

The destination of the SB Sports Injuries Series went down to the wire with the Championship decided on the final race of the Series at Dan Watts buried himself to win at the last throw of the dice on the Waters Upton – Hodnet course in Round 17, the third SCCA Autumn 10. Lying in the Silver medal position pre-race Watts was not assured of the win ahead of Chris Halford with the presence of Tim Beardmore amongst the entrants who could have ensured the pair ended tied on points and victory having to be decided on count back. In the end Watts put in a blistering display to beat Halford by 43 seconds with an effort that clearly cost him as he struggled to recover his breath after hurling himself across the finish line in 20 minutes 13 seconds, a huge course personal best.

Watts stated: “With the title on the line I knew I had to turn a good performance to win, and responded well to the pressure turning in probably my best time trial performance this year. I was pleased to take the title after having a solid campaign in the SB Series. Again, another Series on top of the others that is a credit to the Shropshire time trial Community and those that make it possible“.

Halford has led the Series for much of the season but despite winning the first two Autumn 10’s with superb efforts could not hold off Watts at the death. Halford added Overall Silver to his SB Veteran’s Gold title which he settled as early as Round 14. The Wrekinsport rider stopped the watch on 20:56 to see off the attentions of Beardmore by 13 seconds and finish in runner-up spot on the day having emptied the tank to defend his lead, though it was not to be. He commented: “I’ve enjoyed the racing this year, a big thanks to the people who make it happen. Looking forward to a break and a quieter season next year“.

Beardmore meanwhile ended his truncated season in some style, taking third spot in 21:09, seven seconds faster than Watts’ Round 16 time and showing but for a supreme display he could have split the medallists. Beardmore’s time was a personal best which saw him finish 8th in the table despite not being able to ride until Round 11 due to injury, and shows his determination to make up for lost time. The Nova Raider was under no illusions about the quality of the ride that took the win however, stating: “The weather was good and it felt like a fast day. I went out hard and tried to hang on. My legs felt strong and I was very pleased with my time and a personal best. Amazing time by Dan Watts to take the win. Thanks to timekeepers and marshals, a great way to end the season“.

With six of the 12 available medals to be decided on the day the final Women’s medal was also sealed by a last gasp effort as Helen Tudor took the maximum 20 points on offer to capture SB Women’s Bronze with another course personal best of 25:53. Tudor beat Women’s Champion Louise Hurdley by 10 seconds after the pair could not be split in Round 16 with Overall Women’s honours going to Wrexham RC’s Amanda Bailey on the day. Tudor commented: “A nice way to end my season with a course best and the bonus of Series Bronze. Well done to Louise and Alison. Thanks to Mid Shropshire Wheelers for putting on the event and to SB Sports Injuries for continuing to support the SCCA. Also thanks to Cheri and Ellerdine Village Hall for again making us so welcome“.

Bailey meanwhile has travelled to all three of the Autumn 10’s in her first season time trialling and was delighted to take the Women’s win on the day with a fine effort of 25:21. Her post-race comments echo the feelings of many of the visiting riders who take advantage to race on into October: “I only started doing my club time trials this year and really enjoyed it, so at the end of the season decided to enter a couple of the 25 milers that were left. I got the bug I think then a friend suggested I do the Autumn SB Series events which were ace. Really friendly and well organised, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed them so thank you. I am now looking forward to hopefully competing in some more next year“!

In the SB Junior Series it was a straight head-to-head between Mid Shropshire Wheelers’ Jack Young and Evolve’s George Coombes to decide Silver and Bronze – though nobody told Sam Holwill who took the win on the afternoon. The Hafren CC rider stopped the watch on 22:37 to finish sixth Overall from a field of 36 riders, all the more impressive given he was on restricted gearing and had to spin furiously to post a great time as he explained: “I was extremely pleased with my time in the time trial as I was on a road bike with ‘Youth A’ gearing. I’m looking forward to next season now“.

Young and Coombes were split by 13 seconds with Young taking Junior Silver thanks to his fine effort of 24:21 which took 12th spot Overall. With a headwind on the return leg however Young had to battle on the return leg as he explained: “I’m happy with Silver, but it was hard work on the way back“. Coombes meanwhile enjoyed his final race as a Junior before he moves up to the Senior category next year and was satisfied with having a reminder of the season: “I’m very pleased to win the Bronze medal in my last year as a Junior. A big thank you to Mark and Louise from MSF Fitness for coaching me and to the organisers and marshals for making the events possible“.

That left one final medal to be decided – and it was won without turning a pedal as Rich Smith took SB Veteran’s Bronze. The Wrekinsport rider learnt of his medal win whilst in the middle of a block of training in Majorca and was delighted to end an excellent year with further silverware to add to an impressive season-long haul, commenting: “I’m really happy to win a medal in this Series in such good company. We’re blessed with accessible season-long events in the county due to organisers and volunteers, long may it continue. Looking forward to 2020 now“!
