SCCA Autumn 10 No.1

The course record was smashed and a significant number of riders registered personal bests in lovely conditions for Round 15 of the SB Sports Injuries Series. 46 riders took advantage of an unseasonably warm late September day as Arthur Franklin became only the second rider to beat the magical 20 minute/30mph barrier on the Waters Upton – Hodnet 10 mile course. Aided by the lovely new surface at Peplow and a crosswind that helped more than it hindered, Portishead CC rider Franklin sliced nine seconds off Josh Williams’ long-standing record to stop the watch on 19 minutes 38 seconds to make the most of a visit to brother Harry, who gave the family double reason to celebrate with a big personal best of 22:43 himself.

Franklin was delighted with setting a course record and enjoyed his afternoon out, commenting: “It was a really good course with a decent surface and fast in places with the new tarmac. The weather was excellent with some really warm conditions, but the wind was tough on the return. A fantastic turn out and quick times across the board, it’s great to see so many riders from different clubs attending and supporting these local races. Really pleased for by brother, Harry, breaking into the Top 10 and setting a PB by over a minute in less than ideal conditions. A huge thank you as always to the organisers, timekeepers, marshals and everyone that helps to keep these events going“.

Meanwhile there’s a huge tussle in progress for supremacy in the SB Sports Injuries Series with Chris Halford trying his utmost to fend off a late challenge from Dan Watts for Series Gold. Both set huge course personal bests in their attempt to unseat the other with Halford taking the Overall runners-up spot and the maximum 20 points for the best-placed County rider with a superb ride of 20:39. This is the first time the Wrekinsport rider has beaten 21 minutes on this course and he clearly paid for the effort the day after: “I’ve wanted to get a twenty on that course before the season ends, the warm weather made  it a bit easier but I ended up with sore legs the day afterwards“. Halford has already sealed the SB Veterans title but will have to go down to the wire before the Overall SB title is established.

Watts was just seven seconds behind Halford in 20:46 and is making the closing stages of the SB Series an intriguing watch as he homes in on Halford’s lead in this best 12 rides from 17 Series. Whilst Halford already has 12 qualifying rounds Watts will not until the final event. He stated: “My first time on the time trial bike since the last round as I’ve been off racing mountain bike and road. I didn’t have too many expectations so was pleased to go sub-21 and a course PB for me so I can’t complain. A good turn of speed from Chris Halford took a tight county win, but think we were all put in our place by Arthur Franklin’s ride, kudos to him. For me it’s been a long season and it’s just a case of getting the next few time trials done and bring home as many points as possible and hopefully the Series win“.

Whilst Halford showed his supremacy in the Veteran’s Championship with a winning +5:57 a new Veteran was surprised that her first race in the category resulted in a runner-up spot to add to the Women’s win on the day. Emma Serjeant registered a fine +4:52 on Standard to add to her 23:22 actual which saw her dominate the Women’s race by over two minutes. This was a huge personal best for the Hafren CC rider in her first appearance in the Series in 2019. An elated Serjeant stated: “I’m very happy with my result especially as there was quite a cross wind. A 10 mile personal best by over 30 seconds! My first time trial in the Veteran category so it was nice to be runner up. Thank you to all the organisers and helpers“.

Serjeant’s team mate Louise Hurdley continues to pick up steady points in her pursuit of the SB Women’s Championship and she added a good 18 points thanks to her 25:37 ride.

In the Junior Series Revolutions Racing’s Henri Bedford has already sealed Gold but finished a strong 5th Overall with another course personal best of 21:57. Bedford saw off a strong challenge from James Satoor by 28 seconds to take that win and he was pleased with his late season form, stating: “I found the wind challenging at times but I was pleased with riding under 22 minutes, setting a course personal best. Congratulations to Arthur Franklin for his win and a new course record. Well done to all riders, and thank you to the marshals“.

Meanwhile there was some other fine Junior rides, with Jack Young lifting himself into the Junior Silver medal position thanks to his 24:41 effort in a race which will also go down to the wire. His Mid Shropshire Wheelers’ team mate Carys Blowers made an immediate impression in her first ever time trial, just days after her 12th birthday, the minimum age to race solo on public roads. Flying away from the start line with purpose she posted a very respectable 28:45.
