Oswestry Paragon Hilly 19

A quick rerun of the postponed Oswestry Paragon Hilly 19 saw the Women’s course record smashed and a strong showing in the Veterans category from Marches CC in Round 11 of the SB Sports Injuries Series. With the fearsome climb to Welsh Frankton tackled from both sides the event favoured the lightweight and the hill climb specialist – with the rider who took Bronze in the 2017 Coaching Revolutions Hill Climb Series putting that ability to good use as David Scott took a 22 second win from Oswestry Paragon’s Tom Richardson.

Scott stopped the watch on 45 minutes 13 seconds, a stunning time considering he competed on a road bike and suffered from a hold up. Scott commented: “I was really happy to win, especially since I was on my road bike. I paced it well and finished strong, but a shame about congestion in Whittington“!

Making his first appearance in the SB Series Richardson put local knowledge to good use, knowing just what was needed to tackle the climb to register a fine 45:35. Even so, at time trial pace that climbing took its toll, as he explained: “I felt good from the start and grew into the effort on course. The second time over the brow climb was a lung buster, having to dig in deep near the top, but I finished strong. Happy with second place on the night overall“.

Richardson wasn’t the only one feeling the effects of the double climb, though Sarah Grant wasn’t for hanging around, taking the Women’s Course Record by a huge margin of 1:59 and victory by 6:07, showing the sheer quality of her ride helped by doing some research pre-race. After a late entry to the SB Series Grant charged up the leader board thanks to her 49:19 effort, moving up to 5th spot in the standings. She stated: “A great course hosted by a very friendly club – many thanks, especially for the tips about the climbs. I’m sure as I came around the roundabout to make ascent number two and catching a view of the hill in its full sunlit glory, actual words came out of my mouth along the lines of, “oh no – brutal”! What an honour to hold a course record“.

In the Veterans Series two Marches CC riders dominated the standings, again putting local knowledge of the climbs to good use. Top of the pile was 70 year-old Stuart Mitchell, in some of the best form of his life thanks to a new bike. Mitchell set a fine Veterans ‘plus’ of +7:07, beating 71 year-old team mate Paddy Crisp into the runner-up spot 37 seconds back in a continuing friendly rivalry. Mitchell’s post-race comments were succinct: “A head wind out and tail wind home – perfect. Good marshalling“. Crisp added: “It was very warm, but I did a negative split and went better in the second half. I got a personal best. Happy with that“.

In the Junior Series Revolutions Racings’ Henri Bedford continues to pile on the pressure at the top of the standings as the 14 year-old put his weight advantage to good use to extend his lead to 58 points despite facing an unfamiliar course. Bedford stopped the watch on 48:42, beating Mid Shropshire Wheeler Jack Young by 3:28. He commented: “My first time on this course, the hills looked ominous. I really enjoyed the race and was glad the organisers could rearrange. Great marshalling. Thanks to all involved in staging the round“.
