Oswestry Paragon CC 10.

The course record went as Thomas Brazier dipped below the 20 minute mark for the first time on the Arddleen – Buttington course to win the Oswestry Paragon CC 10 overall for the third year running, with Dan Watts taking County honours in Round 12 of the Friction Hydraulics Series. Brazier stopped the watch on 19 minutes 56 seconds to beat Josh Williams’ previous mark of 20:04 set in 2015. The Arddleen – Buttington course has always promised fast times but has never paid dividends until now thanks to a warm, still evening absent from all previous editions.

Watts meanwhile took the County win in 20:14 and entered the Top 10 standings for the first time with an advantage of 58 seconds over nearest competition Bryn Davies. The SCCA Private Member has won Friction Series honours twice and finished runner-up once in the three rounds he has entered, showing the fine form he is in. He was however surprised by the potential the course finally revealed: “I was pleased to take the County win and register a good time, I expected the course to be a lot slower. I got out to the turn well, but like many others I died with about two miles to go. The last little drag to the line felt like it lasted a mile. Thanks to Oswestry Paragon for a well marshalled event and good weather“.

Davies’ County runner-up spot propelled him back to the top of the Overall standings on the back of his 21:12 effort as the reigning Friction Series Champion sets out his stall in defence of his title. But the Hafren CC rider wasn’t finished there, also taking the runner-up spot in the Veteran’s Championship with a fine +5:11 to stretch his lead in this Series as he aims for the double. Still suffering from the Shropshire Championship 100 four days earlier Davies was another rider struggling with the final two miles: “It was tough racing after the 100, I was still quite sore from that but once underway I felt OK. I pushed a little hard on the way out and paid a little for the last couple of miles. Great conditions, and nice to ride on a good surface. A great job by Oswestry Paragon, thanks to Helen, Rob and all involved. Well done to Dan who put in a cracking ride for the win, he’s on fire at the moment“!

Beating Davies in the Veteran’s competition was a rider doubling up on wins as Deb Hutson-Lumb not only took Veteran’s honours in +5:31, she just missed out on equalling the Women’s course record by one second. Hutson-Lumb finished a strong eighth Overall in 23:38 in her fastest 10 of the year, two and a half minutes faster than Women’s Series leader Jenny York. The Nova Raider was another rider surprised by the times being set in favourable conditions: “I’ve been wanting to get a sub-24 minute 10 this season but wasn’t expecting it on this course! A bit of a wobbly start – note to self not to point bike at kerb for the push off – but then got into a good rhythm and, remembering the advice from other half, pedalled faster on the downhill bits when I ran out of gears. I had no traffic on the turn for a change and the return leg didn’t feel as hard as I expected. So a good evening and an enjoyable ride. Many thanks everyone who helped organise and run another great event“.

Hutson-Lumb’s team mate Andy Rose also got in on the action with a fine third place in the Veteran’s Series thanks to a personal best. Rose set a 22:13 actual which converted to a +4:32 Veteran’s Standard, and he was clearly satisfied with his evening out: “I’m delighted with the result and pleased that I recorded a personal best time. Conditions were perfect on the night. Thanks to all the organisers and marshals for putting on a great event“.

But the impressive rides weren’t finished there with Kieran Morris adding another 60 points to his Junior Series lead – and finishing third County rider in a powerful 22:02. Morris was getting his first sight of the course and showed no signs of rustiness after a break: “I’ve had a few weeks off racing so I was chuffed to be on the start line again. My first time on the course, I really liked it. Thank you to the organisers great event. Looking forward to County 10 Championship and then the Welsh Time Trial Championship. Well done Dan and Bryn, fabulous rides“.
