18 hours after taking Overall runner-up spot Henri Bedford went one better on completely different terrain in Round 3 of the SB Sports Injuries Series. Rearranged from its usual March date due to Covid-19 restrictions, the North Shropshire Wheelers’ Hawkstone Hilly 19 features tough climbs, swooping descents and technical bends; and then challenges riders to go around again on a circuit of Prees Green – Weston-Under-Redcastle – Marchamley rather than pan flat out and back.

Bedford charge around the double circuit in 43 minutes 14 seconds for a clear win of 1:32 over former North Shropshire Wheelers rider Tom Garbett, with his light weight helping him up the climb past Hawkstone Follies. This elevated the 17 year-old into a 22 point lead of the SB Series overall, as well as stretching his lead in the SB Junior Series to 12 points over Harry Corney, who finished in 51 minutes exactly for 5th place overall. The Revolutions Racing rider was pleased with his morning’s work, stating: “I enjoy the tough and challenging course of the 19 mile hilly, it was great fun. Good weather and low winds made for a fast day even with the elevation. Big thanks to North Shropshire Wheelers for hosting the event”.

Making his first appearance in the SB Series this year Newport Shropshire CC’s Ollie Atkin took a strong third spot, with the nature of the course not disadvantaging road bike riders and particularly favouring road men. Atkin posted a very respectable effort of 46:37, edging out John Hines in 48:14. These were the only riders beating the 50 minute mark.

Hines however took overall victory in the Veteran’s race, with ha strong Veteran’s Standard of +3:09, one of only four riders to beat their age-related target on a circuit that makes it hard to beat. Hines commented: “A lovely sunny day and perfect for racing – great to be pinning on numbers after a long break, and very grateful to organisers for putting on this event on a tough, sporting and enjoyable circuit. It certainly took it out of me, but I felt good on the push to the line”.

Taking the maximum Veteran’s points on offer was nothing unfamiliar to North Shropshire Wheelers’ Gino Trasatti, who is intimately familiar with the roads living within the circuit. Trasatti posted a very strong +2:51, as well a knocking a big chunk out of his 2020 effort in an event held on the cusp of lockdown restrictions, as he explained: “The Hawkstone Hilly is always a tough course especially as it’s the start of North Shropshire Wheelers’ racing season. I always enjoy this challenge and managed to achieve a faster time than last year by 1:14. Once again thanks to all the organisers and helpers”.
