Road Bikes are the ‘in’ thing in time trialling, so a new initiative of a Road Bike only event was added to the Friction Hydraulics Series as Round 7: The North Shropshire Wheelers Andy Durber Memorial 9.7, to mix things up a bit. A brand new course created especially to celebrate the club’s 100th anniversary and named after the club’s former President; this really was a lumpy test. Starting at Hodnet and climbing past Marchamley before some respite through Prees Lower Heath; riders had to steel themselves for the climb past Hawkstone Follies and the killer 19% finish of Marchamley cutting, unused in a time trial since the early 1990’s.

Inaugural course records were set by a flying Kirk Vickers of Holohan Coaching, hurling himself up the final hurdle in best hill climb form to stop the watch on 23 minutes 33 seconds; and a Dave Scott Coaching rider making her first Series appearance, Sophie Edge, who registered a fine 29:25.

The forecast was not great for this morning race, which has seen standing water cancel the Hawkstone Hilly 19 which use the same, potentially problematical stretch past the Follies cause cancellations more than once, but thankfully there was just drizzle and a distinct chill in the air to add a couple of extra dimensions. The course was tailor-made for Vickers, the 2021 BBR Hill Climb Champion, who took the final lung-bursting effort in his stride: “The new course was great, a good turn out of riders in drizzly conditions. I was pleased with my performance on this shorter time trial, well done to all riders and marshals on a chilly wet morning”. Even with the Road Bike handicaps applied Vickers performance was so dominant he won this competition too by 1:59 from Stuart Proctor.

A first-time entrant made an immediate impression as Dave Scott Coaching rider Sophie Edge set the inaugural Female record in an event attracting a good quota of females taking on the tough challenge. Edge pushed out Paramount’s Thea Osmund-Smith, her soon-to-be 2-Up partner, by 1:12 and clearly enjoyed the experience: “Despite the challenging weather conditions I really enjoyed the event. It’s a fun course, and all of the friendly faces made my first time trial a very welcoming one! It was great to see so many women on the start list; and to raise money for two fantastic causes”. All surpluses were divided equally among West Midlands Air Ambulance and Hope House Children’s Hospice.

Edge’s team Principal Dave Scott has won the BBR Hill Climb Series for the last three years, but didn’t have an answer for a flying Vickers on the day, finishing exactly two minutes back in 25:33, ahead of Paramount’s Will Preston. The fact this wasn’t a pure vertical challenge was cited as the difference by Scott, who was generous in his post-race comments: “I loved the course but was firmly put in my pace by an on form Kirk. I paced it well, but didn’t have the speed overall to match Kirk on the flatter sections. It was great to see so many competitors, especially ladies in a local event”.

Third-placed Preston had a completely unexpected reason to ride the event as he stopped the watch on 25:51, 16 seconds ahead of team mate Paul Duncan in another major step forward for Paramount in the Top Club Award standings, now holding a huge 1400 point lead. He explained: “It was a great course, I really liked it. Especially as it went past the church and wedding venue that I’m getting married in soon! It was my first time trial for the year, so a good start. I hope that it is run again next year – thanks North Shropshire Wheelers for putting it on”.

Proctor extended his Friction Road Bike Series lead thanks to his adjusted 25:32 – just one second ahead of Scott on handicap in what has so far been a major source of interest between the team mates. Proctor also took the win in the Friction Veterans competition too with -0:15 ahead of Duncan in -0:24: all riders need to know about what a tough challenge this course is when every Veteran records a negative score. He stated: “Definitely an event to keep an eye on the forecast for this technical course, especially that potentially greasy hilly finish under the trees! Sadly damper than hoped for, but still, it was great to get back to Wollerton Hall as HQ. I knew some of the course from previous outings, although on a reconnoitre the previous day I was shocked at how bad the surface from the start to Lower Heath had got. All okay though, room enough for a bike to manoeuvre around, and still a really lovely route. I felt great on the day, had a great start and felt in control all the way around. It was another game of ‘cat and mouse’ though with Dave Scott, my minute man, and unsurprisingly he caught me just coming into Weston. Overall a great morning, I was really happy with my time, and as expected superb organising, thanks loads to all involved”!

It was great to see the first Junior entrant of the season take on the challenge in his longest time trial so far, as 14 year old Mid Shropshire Wheeler Taliesin Goh finished in a very respectable 32:02 for 17th place overall. Light weight is definitely an advantage on these hills, especially the finish, and Goh was very complementary about the organisation, commenting: “It was a tough race, quite hilly. I was happy with my ride. This was the first 10 mile time trial I’ve ever done. Thanks to all the marshals – without them this event wouldn’t be possible”.
