Shropshire Cycling Clubs Association Spring 10 No.2

There was something special in the air as warm and practically still conditions inspired a number of personal bests and some close-fought battles in Round 2 of The SB Sports Injuries Series – with Matt Garthwaite posting an impressive winning time in the second SCCA Spring 10 at Waters Upton. The Rhino Velo rider won by a huge margin of 1 minute 40 seconds, posting a great time of 20 minutes 52 seconds – but despite that fabulous effort believed he only received one good turn the whole way around, commenting: “I was expecting a more favourable outward leg,  but the only favour I felt was the massive push-off by Ed Middleton“!

Middleton eventually jumped on his bike to finish fourth in 22:57 and head to the top of the SB Series for the first time. In between were two young riders both posting personal bests, with Kieran Morris making up for a mechanical issue which ruined his Round 1 effort with a fine 22:32. The 17 year-old added the Junior win to Overall runner-up spot and, typical of personal best rides, felt the pain of his effort: “After last week’s puncture where I felt really good I struggled. I was pleased with a personal best on this course though, it’s nice to see the winter training has gone well. Well done to Matt, great ride. A top event“.

Another young rider finished in third spot with 19 year-old James Bell, also recording a personal best – 22:50. Meanwhile 14 year-old Jack Young ended a top day for teenager riders, maintaining his lead at the top of the Junior Series and shaving two seconds off the personal best he set in Round 1 with a fine 25:19.

Personal bests weren’t restricted to the youngsters with Emma Serjeant posting a massive effort to not only knock a huge margin off her previous best – she also took a major win in the Women’s Series by the narrowest of margins – a second. The Hafren CC rider stopped the watch on 24:49 to push out Nova Raiders’ Charlotte Chapman, and was delighted with her ride, explaining: “A personal best for me by over a minute so I’m very happy! Well done to Charlotte, it looks like it’s going to be an exciting women’s competition“.

Chapman echoed Serjeant’s sentiments, adding: “I’m over the moon with that time, and it’s great to have some close female competition! I surprised myself going that fast so early in the season and with so few miles in my legs. Great event“! Meanwhile Chapman’s team mate Jenny Newton headed into the lead of the Women’s Series thanks to her 26:19 effort, with Charlotte’s mother Jane moving into the runner-up spot.

In the Veteran’s Series it was a close run thing with a rider at the other end of the age scale taking a win by just four seconds. North Shropshire Wheelers’ Dave Wilson showed none of his 76 years to record a fine +3:43 to push out Mid Shropshire Wheelers’ Tony Harvey. That effort saw Wilson take up an unusual triple-tie at the top of the Veteran’s standings along with Ian Nisbett and a further member of the Chapman clan, Steve, keeping success in the family. Wilson commented: “It was nice to have a bit of sun and very little wind. My first hard ride of the year. Looking forward to the next round”. Harvey added: “It was good to be back in the saddle again after a long break. Thanks to Oswestry Paragon and Hafren CC for organising, looking forward to the Team Time Trial“.
