Nova Raiders 10

The 16th and final round of The Friction Hydraulics Series for 2019 saw a solid win for Chris Halford, the remaining seven Series medals cemented and Nova Raiders winning the Top Club Award for the third year running. That win for Nova Raiders came following their own well-received 10 mile event on the Waters Upton – Hodnet course and was done in style as the club took five of the Top 10 places on the day to add a giant 245 points to their final tally of 1680.

Despite that domination of the Top 10 they didn’t take the Overall win as Chris Halford came home in first place with a superb effort of 21 minutes 10 seconds with four of those Nova Raiders fleshing out the remaining Top 5. Halford saw off the attentions of Tim Beardmore by 21 seconds after taking a short break, and wasn’t sure what his form would be like as a result – he needn’t have worried. He stated: “A tough few weeks away from the bike. I wasn’t sure whether I’d race again this season, so a surprise to get the win. Very well organised“.

Beardmore missed the start of the racing season due to injury but has come back stronger than ever with his 21:31 pushing out team mate Dean Callister by 17 seconds for the runner-up spot. He was pleased with both his own performance and that of his team, commenting: “I was pleased with my time, and I don’t think I could have done any more on the day. Chapeau to Chris Halford for the win. Lots of strong rides from Nova team mates on the day to end another great season for the club. Great cakes as well“!

Callister meanwhile rounded off an excellent first season with the club and did well on his first attempt at the flattest 10 mile course in Shropshire, although like many he struggle with the tough headwind that hampered progress on the return leg: “My first time racing on this course, it was a tough return leg with the head wind. I was pleased with my ride, and a great event to finish my first season on. Well done and thanks to all Nova Raiders team mates for a great first season. Looking forward to the next“.

Whilst none of the Top 3 were challenging for the Overall Series medals the final one outstanding was settled on the day, with another Nova Raider, Dean Dovey helping himself to Bronze on the strength of his fifth place on the day in 22:24. Like Callister, Dovey was gaining his first experience of the Shropshire Series this year and evidently enjoyed it: “I’ve loved racing this Series, great competition and many characters make it such fun. Well done to all medal winners, and a huge thanks to all volunteers that keep this wheel turning come rain or shine. See you all next year“.

All three medals were undecided in the Friction Veteran’s Series pre-race but another Nova Raider clinched Gold with a terrific closing win of +5:30, just pushing Halford out by four seconds on the day. That ride came from Deb Hutson-Lumb who added Veteran’s Gold to the Women’s Gold she captured in Round 15 making it a vintage season. She emphasised what a worthy Women’s Champion she is with a win on the day on Actual too after crossing the line in 23:57 to just beat off a strong challenge from Hafren CC’s Emma Serjeant by three seconds. A delighted Hutson-Lumb stated: “It was great to win my final time trial of 2019. A close finish though with a strong Emma Sergeant chasing me all the way. Winning Friction Hydraulics Veteran’s Gold was a target this year so it was really great to achieve that. Another fabulous event with cake – thank you to everyone who helped make it happen“.

Serjeant just missed out on the Women’s Bronze thanks to a strong defence from another Nova Raider Charlotte Chapman, who has not been spotted competitively since the SCCA 4-Up in August. Chapman knew what she had to do to earn that Bronze medal and finished 3rd Woman on the day in 24:21, ensuring Serjeant missed out by 15 points. She commented: “My first race in ages, it’s a wonder I can still remember to ride the bike! I’m proud to be a part of Nova winning the Top Club Award again, it’s been a great season all round. A massive thanks to everyone who’s been involved“.

With Dovey also capturing Veteran’s Bronze he had double reason to celebrate, though just missed out on the Silver medal by 10 points after finishing 5th on the day with +4:43. His ride wasn’t quite enough to overhaul Hafren CC’s Ian Nisbett, who added that Veteran’s Silver to his Overall Series Gold and was sitting this race out. When told however he was pleased to add to his medal haul, stating: “I’m very pleased to take the Silver in the Veteran’s class to compliment the Gold on Overall. The Veteran’s section is always super competitive and very close – and there are lots of very fast ‘old’ cyclists out there, which is great as it gives me hope and makes me feel less ancient! Well done to all who competed this season“.

In the Friction Junior Series Evolve’s George Coombes made only his second foray in the Series and took a 24 second win from Newport’s Nathan Hester in 24:51 in his final season as a Junior. Coombes joined many riders in suffering on the return leg, but was pleased with a win, stating: “The cross-headwind on the way back made it very difficult, although I am very happy to win the Junior category. Thank you to the marshals and organisers for making the event possible“.

That left the two final medals in the Junior Series to be won with Sam Holwill already winning Bronze after Round 15, with both winners unavailable to race. Kieran Morris is another Junior in his final year in the category and signed off in some style by capturing Junior Gold by just 10 points from Henri Bedford. Morris was full of praise for his rivals commenting: “It’s always nice to win a Series Gold. Henri and Sam made me raise my game this year. My last year as a Junior so time to try and mix it with the big boys next season. Thank you to everyone involved, and well done to all the riders who took part in the Series“. Bedford added: “I’m pleased with achieving Silver in the Series as I was unable to compete in all the races due to other commitments. Well done to Kieran, Sam and all riders, and thank you to the clubs, volunteers and supporters“.
