Two course records were broken despite tough conditions in Round 9 of the SB Sports Injuries Series, with Mid Shropshire Wheelers’ Howard Lewis making the most of local knowledge in the Oswestry Paragon CC Hilly 19. Ellesmere-based Lewis shaved six seconds off Josh Williams’ 2014 benchmark, battling through a tough headwind which affected the Ellesmere-Whittington leg of the course – already a challenge thanks to having to climb to Welsh Frankton in both directions. Lewis set an impressive time of 42 minutes 19 seconds to take the Overall win by over a minute as well as the honours in the Veterans Series with a fabulous +8:18. He stated: “I’m super happy! It was a windy night and a challenging course, but I paced my effort well, and managed to lift it slightly in the final couple of miles when I realised the record was within reach“.

Getting closest to Lewis’ record was Overall and Veterans’ Series leader Bryn Davies who finished 1:03 back from Lewis in 43:22. Davies stretched his Overall lead to a big margin of 44 points; with his third-placed +6:57 in the Veterans’ race also eking out his lead in this Series to 36 points meaning the Hafren CC rider will be a tough act to reel in. Davies was happy with his efforts, commenting: “I’m pretty happy with that! A windy night, but I still managed a personal best. I paced it well, but a rapid time by Howard! Thanks to Oswestry Paragon for a great night’s racing“.

Taking third spot overall with 43:57 Stuart Proctor went one better in the Veterans, helping himself to the runner-up spot in +7:24. Proctor is making a late charge for the Veteran’s Series after missing four rounds and is trying his utmost to narrow down Davies’ lead. He stated: “It was pretty windy, the return leg from Ellesmere was a brute! I kept seeing Howard close behind on my exit from both roundabouts which spurred me on! More cramp from Gobowen didn’t help, but really pleased with a sub-44 having not done the course before! Thanks to all at Oswestry Paragon“.

With Nova Raiders’ Jenny Newton absent Pauline Hughes took full advantage to slice 20 points off her Series lead, moving to 14 points behind Newton thanks to lowering the Women’s Course Record previously set by Jenny York in 2012 by 14 seconds. The Revolutions Racing rider fought through the wind to lower that record to 51:48, commenting: “It was a tough headwind on the return from Ellesmere! The supporters and marshals at Whittington were brilliant and made it an enjoyable event”.
