A red hot day saw Matt Gibbons take a maiden win in Round 9 of the Friction Hydraulics Series, the George Herbert Stancer Regional Championship for Schoolboys and Girls/Mid Shropshire Wheelers Open 10 at Waters Upton. Gibbons made the most of the steamy conditions to finish top of the pile with a six second advantage over Series leader Victor Chetta in a fabulous time of 21 minutes 45 seconds. The Nova Raider has finished close to the top in prior rounds but showed the form that so impressed in the Coaching Revolutions 2-Up Series four days previously to cement his current sixth spot in the overall standings. A delighted Gibbons commented: “I was super-chuffed with a first individual win. It was nice to ride through Peplow to enjoy the shade! Well done to all on a good event from Mid Shropshire Wheelers”. Gibbons wasn’t the only Nova Raider doing well either with five members in the Top 10 seeing the club stretch their Top Club Award lead to a big margin of 300 points.

Long-distance specialist Chetta also stretched his lead, but here it was at the top of the Overall standings thanks to his 21:51 effort for runners-up spot on the day, seeing off the man who is on his coat tails by a narrow four second margin – Bryn Davies whilst taking the major points for the promoting club. Whilst coping best with the nagging crosswind which was a feature of this event. He stated “It was a lovely afternoon for it. A short event meant the heat wasn’t an issue for me”. And that ability to cope with the heat seems to have been the difference between Chetta and Davies, who suffered significantly. He revealed: “I struggled in the heat. My heart rate was up to 208bpm and averaged 195bpm. It’s very close at the top, a great result for Matt who’s getting quicker all the time and only seconds between the top three making for a great competition”.

Davies still lies at the top of the Veteran’s Series thanks to a runner-up spot in this competition with +4:18. However that lead has been narrowed to just 10 points thanks to a winning effort of +4:38 from Revolutions Racing’s Stuart Proctor. Proctor has piled on the pressure in the last few rounds and the battle between this pair is one of the features of the 2017 Series. He commented: “That was a mega-hot one, I was dry mouthed for the whole ride! A great afternoon and organisation was fabulous as usual from The Mids. The course felt great until turning at the roundabout, that wind on the way back in was pretty grim! I was more than happy to take the Veterans win in those conditions, think my pacing is getting there”.

With 11 Juniors in competition, the biggest turnout of youngsters this season there was some challenge to Junior Series leader Sam Morris. The 17 year-old showed his form however, digging deep to take the Junior win with a fine 23:32, 61 seconds ahead of Matty Redworth. Morris’ lead of 375 points is a big hurdle for any rider out to challenge him over the last seven rounds, but the Revolutions Racing rider didn’t have it easy as he explained: “It was a tough day, very hot and I underestimated the wind. My first race in a good few weeks so I was surprised how well I went”.

Nova Raiders also took the win in the Women’s Series with 20 year-old Charlotte Chapman showing a big improvement in form as her first full season has progressed. Chapman took a good win of 29 seconds over Women’s Series leader Pauline Hughes after stopping the watch on 24:35. She stated: “I felt strong going into it even though the heat was off-putting. I was warned about the wind coming back and still didn’t listen! A great race, thanks Mid Shropshire Wheelers“.

  • Round 10 of the Friction Hydraulics Series is a major chance for County medals as Paramount CRT present The Coaching Revolutions Shropshire Championship 10 on Sunday. This is the first use of the super-fast Nesscliffe bypass course for a solo event in eight years which should produce some great times.
