David Scott took a fine win in Round 6 of The Coaching Revolutions Hill Climb Series to elevate himself into the Overall runner-up spot. Scott was just two seconds outside the course record set by Series leader Kirk Vickers in 2016 in the Nova Raiders ‘Abbey’ Road climb at Lilleshall, stopping the watch on 4 minutes 42.64 seconds. The 1.87 mile climb is relatively shallow, but changes gradient significantly over it’s length – including a portion of descending which catches out the uninitiated and means an eyeballs out effort is required.

Scott was left rueing just missing out on that record, revealing some wheel spin at the start had affected him as he sprung away from the start line: “It was tough getting traction with the muddy road at the start, but I finished strongly and am really happy with my time“!

Scott’s performance was a dominant one, putting nearly 22 seconds into the runner-up – but Matty Redworth’s fine effort of 5:04.45 showed how much this Series suits Juniors. The 17 year-old led home a good turnout of four under-18 riders, taking over the lead of the Junior Series as a result after fending off the attentions of Hafren CC’s Sam Holwill, Junior runner-up in 5:23.64. But Redworth wasn’t finished there as his ride propelled him into 4th spot in the Overall standings too. He was pleased with his morning’s work, commenting: “A hard one to judge with the downhill but I managed to up the power for a last kick and was happy with second overall“.

Redworth wasn’t the only rider taking over a Series lead, with Holwill’s team mate Emma Serjeant rising to the top of the Women’s ranks thanks to her 6:04.51 climb. Serjeant overhauled Jenny York, who sacrificed her ride to help time keep the event; with the Hafren rider enjoying her morning out. She commented on both the nature of the course and on taking over the Women’s Series lead: “Flat and fast! I’m pleased to be in the lead and hope I can stay there for the rest of the Series“!

Robin Guy made a tremendous entrance into the hill climb discipline with a win in the Veteran’s category at his first attempt. The Nova Raider flew the flag for the promoting club after finishing third Overall in a fine time of 5:19.51, surprising himself with his ability. Guy got the better of Veteran’s Series leader Neil Coles with his audacious entrance, with the Oswestry Paragon rider over five seconds back on 5:25.05. A delighted Guy stated: “It was my first hill climb race and I enjoyed it very much – especially once I’d finished! A great time from David Scott, only two seconds off the course record. As always with Nova Raiders’ events it was very friendly and well marshalled“.

Coles meanwhile took consolation in extending that Veteran’s Series lead, though in his first attempt at the ‘Abbey’ Road climb was one of the riders who had been caught out by it’s fast and furious nature. He commented: “A new course for me and not enough up hill, it caught me out a bit. Room for improvement next year“.
