David Scott made it two wins on the trot in Round 7 of The Coaching Revolutions Hill Climb Series – as Kirk Vickers successfully defended his Hill Climb Championship title with the first medal of the Series being sealed. Scott blasted up the tough ¾ mile Station Road climb at Ironbridge presented by Newport Shropshire CC in 3 minutes 20 seconds, a dominant victory of 14 seconds. The Rhino Velo rider had a determined look on his face as he flew up the gradient towards Broseley in an event with a sting near the start. That sting is a tough, 120º bend that ramps viciously, meaning good bike handling skills and the ability to change down the gears quickly is paramount.

Scott found himself tested on his first experience of the climb, commenting: “A tricky corner to negotiate at the start, but I got into a good rhythm after that! I’m happy with the win and am looking forward to Blodwel Bank“! With the events coming quick and fast in this end-of-season Series Scott is already confirmed for this brand new climb promoted by Marches CC’s, but couldn’t quite do enough to stop team mate Kirk Vickers retaining the Overall Championship. He stated: “I’m happy with my climbing form this year, beating last year’s times and power numbers. Well done to all competitors taking part“!

Scott’s closest challenge came from visiting Stourbridge CC rider, who stopped the watch on 3:34 for both runner-up spot and Overall Veteran’s win two seconds ahead of Wolverhampton Wheelers’ Matt Morris. Prince stated: “It was a great event and a great climb, and very well organised. A shame there was one better Overall, but as it’s my first year hill climbing I can’t wait for next year“. Taking maximum points for best-placed County Veteran was Mid Shropshire Wheeler Ian Coupland, just five seconds off Prince’s pace and squeezing the gap at the top of the Veteran’s table by beating Veteran’s leader Neil Coles who finished in 4:09. Coupland enjoyed his morning out, commenting: “I do like this climb. I felt strong and pushed hard, so pleased with both my time and position“.

It was a tight call at the top of the Junior standings with 16 year-old Ronnie Tse surprising Junior Series leader Matty Redworth by two seconds in his maiden entry to the Series. Tse stopped the watch on a highly creditable 3:46 for 5th spot Overall, and found his first attempt at the Station Road climb to have a different character to his normal training routes: “It was a tough climb, nothing like the ones in Stretton but the tight bend at the start was easy to get wrong. I enjoyed it and am looking forward to the next climb! I was not going too hard on the steep bits and gained slight recovery on the flatter bits – seeing the flag at the finish line definitely helped! It was very well organised, and cyclists on the side of the road were very encouraging“. Redworth was also encountering the climb for the first time and stretched his Junior Series lead to 14 points – but hinted he knew where he could have improved: “It was a steep climb which I quite enjoy, but I think I was slightly too conservative at the start. Still happy with my time“!

In the Women’s Series Jenny York retook the Series lead thanks to posting a winning effort of 5:38, beating Newport’s Jacqui Seaton by 48 seconds. York was happy with her time, stating: “I’m pleased with my time and the win. A great event and atmosphere, well done and thanks Newport CC“.
