Bryn Davies elevated himself to the top of the overall standings and consolidated his position at the top of the Veteran’s standings in the SB Sports Injuries Series thanks to a powerhouse performance as he outpaced the nearest opposition by 1 minute 20 in Round 3. After starting on the flat the Series presented a different challenge in North Shropshire Wheelers’ Hawkstone Hilly 19 with riders facing a course including many technical elements, including the tough climb past the Hawkstone Follies twice – not that this fazed Davies. The Hafren CC rider already had a 48 second advantage in the bag at the end of the first lap and stretched that lead with a 44 minute 40 second advantage. He stated: “My training is getting back on track after falling off a bit over winter. Great weather and turnout“.

Davies made in three wins out of three in the Veteran’s Series with a fine +5:39, but the year’s surprise package has been Stuart Proctor, who put in a major shift to finish in the runners-up spot in both Overall and Veteran’s categories. The strength of Proctor’s effort is evident from both high placing rides this year and from who he is beating, as the Revolutions Racing rider pushed former Series leader Victor Chetta into third spot. Proctor stopped the watch on 46 minutes exactly and was effusive in his post-race analysis, stating: “I have been surprised at how much I’ve enjoyed these early hilly courses, and felt pretty strong. The second time up the Weston climb felt hard, and I was grateful for the cheering at the top. Cramping crept in before the Marchamley turn too, but I shrugged it off! Really pleased with silver, but chapeau to Bryn, an absolutely amazing ride, really glad he wasn’t my minute man“! At just 18 seconds off Davies in the Veteran’s standings Proctor might yet have more to come in this contest.

The Series leader after two rounds, Victor Chetta had already admitted that his form had taken a mysterious dip by his fine standards, but sounded a mysterious warning to his rivals that  whatever was causing the problem had been fixed after this race, lining up a great head-to-head for future rounds. The Mid Shropshire Wheeler still put up a great fight, crossing the line in 46:33 for third place, commenting: “A beautiful morning on a fun course. Thanks to North Shropshire Wheelers for organising and running“.

With a field of 24 in competition the nature of the course favoured some over others – not least Ladies National Hill Climb Champion Becky Lewis, newly signed to Mid Shropshire Wheelers. Lewis powered up the Weston climb with ease with a fabulous performance of 48:28 taking 7th spot overall with just four seconds separating her from 5th spot showing how much this course played to her strengths. Lewis was encountering the course for the first time and had nothing but praise, stating: “It was a lovely morning weather-wise, and it was great to ride such an interesting and varied course. North Shropshire Wheelers did a superb job of organising, lots of friendly faces at the finish. A big thanks to all involved“. Lewis elevated herself to joint top of the Ladies standings thanks to this ride, a position she shares with Nova Raiders’ Jenny Newton who also tried her hand at this tough circuit.

Just four seconds ahead of Lewis in 5th spot was 17 year-old Sam Morris, looking to make up ground in the Junior Series. Morris’ 48:24 moved him to two points behind Junior Series leader Tyler Brennan in what looks like shaping up to be an intriguing tussle. Morris commented: “A great race. I love the course, it suits me well! Big thanks to all who organised“.
