Bryn Davies piled on the pressure at the top of the SB Sports Injuries Series in Round 10 at Battlefield. The Hafren CC rider extended his lead of both the Overall and Veterans Series in the North Shropshire Wheelers 25, coping best with a challenging, rolling course that had the added obstacle of freshly laid chippings to slow progress. Davies stopped the watch on 57 minutes 12 seconds to ease out the promoting club’s Richard Kay to the runner-up spot in 58:47, with these the only two riders to beat the hour on this tough out and back course. But Davies wasn’t finished there, registering a fine +9:27 to push Kay into the same position in the Veterans Series after he crossed the line in 7:39.

Davies was pleased with his morning’s work, coming just 18 hours after his race winning efforts at Ludlow in the Friction Hydraulics Series – though not without some degree of suffering. He explained: “I was pleased to get the win, though the chippings slowed progress a bit. Fortunately the worst had been swept up. I pushed a bit too hard going out, and with tired legs from the day before it was a struggle on the return. I managed to muster myself for the last couple of miles to push home. Thanks to North Shropshire Wheelers and all involved”.

Kay enjoyed his morning out and was pleased to take the runner-up spot on an all too rare sighting of the North Shropshire Wheeler. He added: “I was very happy coming second to Bryn on the best 25 course in Shropshire. I rode the hills slower than normal, trying to maintain a more even pace“.

Meanwhile one of the riders to watch found himself in an unaccustomed third spot as Nova Raiders’ Nick Long gained his first podium position. Long was new to the undulating course with his 1:02:27 pushing out a dead heat for fourth between Long’s team mate Tim Beardmore and Mid Shropshire Wheelers’ Ian Hobley, both registering 1:04:15. Long was delighted with his efforts, commenting: “My first time on the course. I enjoyed it, but it was tricky to find a rhythm. Nice to get my first podium”!

Davies wasn’t the only one making it two wins in two days as Revolutions Racing’s Pauline Hughes took the honours in the Women’s Series with a good effort of 1:07:43, pushing out Oswestry Paragon’s Helen Tudor who finished in 1:13 exactly. Hughes took over the lead on the strength of this effort, overhauling Jenny Newton to top the table. But Hughes was another rider not content with a win, finishing third in the Veteran’s competition behind Davies and Kay on +6:40. She stated: “I forgot how lumpy the course was! The new chippings felt like hard work. It was great weather though, and a lovely event from North Shropshire Wheelers”.
