Tomos Hales led home a 1-2 for Wrekinsport CC as his club headed back into the lead of the Top Club Award in Round 16 of the Friction Hydraulics Series, the Shropshire Cycling Clubs Association 10 held on the Waters Upton – Hodnet course. With the event under threat a few weeks earlier Friction Series leader Tim Beardmore stepped up to save the race, and with his eye on keeping his powder dry for the following morning’s 4-Up Championship Hales took full advantage to hammer home a win in 21 minutes 24 seconds, 23 seconds ahead of team mate Chris Halford who made his first Open appearance of the season. With great back up from team mates making up over half of the County entrants Wrekinsport added 240 points to their Top Club Award tally to move into a 115 lead with four rounds to go.

Hales was pleased with his win, noting the longer 5.15 mile ‘out’ leg to be harder thanks to a rare if light northerly wind, unusual for August: “I think I went pretty well, though it was slightly tougher out and fast back. I’m happy with the SCCA win, and big thanks to Tim Beardmore for taking over and keeping the event on. Also thanks to the marshals as was a very well organised event”. Halford not only took the runner-up spot Overall with 21:47 but also finished in the same position in the Friction Veterans race with +5:04, in both cases beating Hafren CC’s Bryn Davies into third spot. Having decided to largely take things easy for the 2022 season he still showed great form in spite of the layoff, although admitting to some ring rust: “I didn’t pace it brilliantly but managed to pull a bit of time back on the return leg. It was great to see such a turn out by Wrekinsport”.

Davies has twice been Series Champion so is accustomed to being at the sharp end of proceedings, but is still finding his way back after time off due to a nasty road traffic accident. He was delighted to take third spot with 22:01 and +4:45 but was modest about that result: “Great sunny conditions for racing, although an unexpected headwind on the way out but seemingly no tailwind on the return – maybe just me feeling it? Luckily a few of the big hitters were not racing as they were either hosting or marshalling which gave me an unexpected third position, thanks guys!  Thanks to all involved, a great day’s racing”.

There was no stopping Deb Hutson-Lumb as she sealed wins in both the Friction Women’s Series and Friction Veteran’s Series with her 23:51 actual good enough for eighth spot Overall whilst her +6:17 on Veterans Standard was a clear win. She was however a bit disappointed by her very high standards, and put it down to keeping something in reserve for the following morning’s challenge: “I had a good ride out to the turn but ran out of watts on the way back. I think my legs were trying to save themselves for the 4-Up – tThanks to Tim for stepping in to organise, and everyone helping out”.
