North Shropshire Wheelers 25 No.2.
Clashing with an England semi-final saw a modest field take full advantage to gain big points on quiet roads with personal bests set in Round 12 of the SB Sports Injuries Series, the second North Shropshire Wheelers Battlefield 25. Overall and Veterans Series leader Ian Nisbett stretched his lead in both Series thanks to posting winning efforts in both competitions – and came within touching distance of sealing the Veteran’s title after adding a giant 26 points to his tally. The Hafren CC rider extended his Overall lead to 20 points over Ed Middleton, who finished runner-up on the night and to an almost unbelievable 116 points in the Veterans thanks to his 58 minute 14 second ride.
Nisbett beat Middleton by 1:01 on actual, with these two riders the only ones beating the hour with the return leg from Battlefield proving sticky. Despite the win however Nisbett was not happy with his ride, commenting: “Certainly my worst ride of the season – yet somehow I came out of it with a decent time. Strange how that happens sometimes. I was very pleased to get the win. Many thanks to the timekeepers and marshals for missing the football on our behalf“! Middleton’s comments show how tough the return leg was on this rolling course, with the headwind adding an extra dimension to the climbs: “It was fun riding the tailwind to the turn, but a bit of a struggle on the return. A great ride by Ian, and massive thanks to everyone who volunteered their time to put on the race“.
Nisbett’s win in the Veteran’s saw him record a solid Veteran’s plus of +8:49, beating North Shropshire Wheelers’ Gino Trasatti into Veteran’s runner-up spot on +7:27 when converted from a 1:05:43 actual. Trasatti was surprised when told he had finished as runner-up and hinted that he had a little to spare: “My race went very well on the way down, but on the way back I struggled against the wind like everybody else, but I really enjoyed it. I’ll have to try harder the next time“!
The Women’s race was split by just three seconds as Sarah Grant scored a huge 22 points Overall and 26 in the Women’s Championship after finishing fourth on actual in a course personal best 1:01:15, just ahead of Women’s Series leader Charlotte Chapman. This fine tally moved Grant into the Top 10 Overall and up to 3rd in the Women’s table. She was under no illusions about how tight the battle with Chapman had been: “It sure was close! Another windy one on the Battlefield course but it felt like we were racing on closed roads! I was really pleased with the result and a personal best for me on the course. Thanks again to North Shropshire Wheelers“.
Grant wasn’t the only rider setting a personal best, nor was Nisbett the only rider focusing in on a Championship as Revolutions Racing’s Henri Bedford set a quality time of 1:05:03 to open his Junior Series lead up to 84 points. The 14 year-old had the distinct advantages of offering a small profile to the wind and light weight helping him take the climbs with relative ease. The youngster knew he had been in a race however after a long day, commenting: “Another challenging 25 after a day at school, but I managed to get a course personal best. Well done to all who rode, and a big thank you to all the marshals“.
