Matt Davies shook off the cobwebs and took a dominant win at Waters Upton in the first SCCA Autumn 10 in Round 14 of The SB Sports Injuries Series. With a late arrival meaning limited time to warm up, the Rhino Velo rider was last man off but overtook five riders to win by over a minute in a fabulous time of 20 minutes 28 seconds. Making his first, belated appearance of the 2017 Series Davies was delighted to be back in action, stating: “I was really pleased with my ride, though several bits I hope I can improve as I was a little rusty, but happy to be back on a time trial. It was great to see familiar faces and an excellently hosted Autumn 10, so thank you to all those involved in making it happen“.

Davies’ nearest challenge came from the man who has already sealed the SB Series, Namesake Bryn Davies. The Hafren CC rider put in a superb effort of 21.32, but that just wasn’t enough to take victory. However Davies did win the Veterans event with a fine +4:46, showing exactly why he has won not only the Overall Championship for 2017 but the Veterans’ Champion too. Davies was however in no doubt of the quality of the ride that had beaten him, as he revealed in his post-race comments: “I was pleased with the Veterans win and my time, though a little disappointed as I went out a little to hard and faded a bit on the return. No chance of catching Matt who put in a storming ride, thanks all for a great day’s racing“. Davies is the only rider who has already sealed a medal in the Series, with all to play for in the final two rounds.

Scott Harris has his eye on those remaining medal places and did himself some good after finishing third overall on the day,  a season best in the SB Series. Harris looked determined as he pulled away from the start line, putting in a fine effort of 22:50 to move himself up into the Silver medal position in the Overall Series. But Harris wasn’t finished there with a third spot in the Veterans Series on the day with a fine +3:37 elevating him into the Silver medal position amongst the Over-40’s. The Nova Raider was pleased with his ride, but was in no doubt of the quality ahead of him, stating: “I enjoyed the race and pushed hard from the start and hung on!. Superb times by Matt and Bryn”.

The man who beat Harris for Veterans runner-up was Mid Shropshire Wheelers’ Andy Hazell, making only his second appearance of the year and posting an excellent +4:11. He was taken aback to finish in such a strong position however as his post-race comments revealed: “I was surprised at taking second Veteran’s spot as I found the day tough! Congratulations to Matt and Bryn, two great rides“.

There was some splendid competition in the Women’s Series with Series leader Pauline Hughes having to work hard from the front to take another victory. Hughes, the first rider off stayed clear to stretch her Series lead to 40 points and is all but mathematically assured of the Championship thanks to her 25:39 ride. She commented: “It went better than expected after a week’s holiday! My pacing was pretty good, and I was very pleased against strong and competitive field – great times by all the ladies“.

Hughes did indeed have some strong challenges to fend off with Emma Serjeant getting closest with a good time of 25:55. The Hafren CC rider was pleased with her effort, battling the northerly headwind on the longer ‘out’ leg. She stated: “I was surprised by the headwind on the way out but managed to make up lots of time on the return leg“.

In the Junior Series both youngsters in competition went home with something to smile about. Revolutions Racing rider Henri Bedford took a fabulous win, setting a new personal best in the process. As the 14 year-old approached the finish line he was clearly aware of how close he was to beating 25 minutes for the first time as he wrestled with the bike to finish in 24:59. Bedford punched the air in delight as he realised what he had done and was still beaming post-race: “I was really pleased with my performance as it was not only a PB at 24:59, it was a course improvement of 71 seconds since July – and on my new bike too! I’ve got a tough target to beat now, but will enjoy the challenge“.

Finishing exactly two minutes behind Bedford, Mid Shropshire Wheelers’ Jack Young lifted himself to the head of the SB Junior Series with a fine effort of 26:59. The always cheery 14-year old was delighted to take over at the top of the standings and is determined to defend that lead, stated: “It was OK, a bit blustery but I enjoyed it. I am going to try my best. I’m happy I’m leading at the moment“.
