Victor Chetta stretched his lead at the top of the Friction Hydraulics Series in Round 7 at the rarely seen 30 mile distance in the SCCA and WCTTCA 30 at Prees. Chetta has struggled with both positioning and form over recent months but took no prisoners in his charge for the line on the Prees – Market Drayton – Hodnet course, sticking out the extra five miles well thanks to a rare easterly wind.

That five mile extension of the more usual 25 mile event can catch the unwary out, but Chetta had no such problems after crossing the finish line with a fine effort of 1 hour 7 minutes 41 seconds to snaffle the maximum 70 points on offer. Chetta explained: “I felt better on the bike than I have in months. There was a lovely tailwind on the return leg. I had four pieces of cake at HQ afterwards to celebrate”.

Whilst Chetta was feeding his appetite Bryn Davies was doing exactly the opposite after a dodgy takeaway relegated him to third place on the morning with the Hafren CC rider struggling to compete. Davies just beat North Shropshire Wheelers’ Richard Kay to third by 10 seconds with a good effort of 1:09:07, but saw Chetta stretch his lead thanks to feeling decidedly under the weather. He explained: “I nearly didn’t compete as I had a dose of food poisoning, a Chinese the night before a 30 mile time trial is not a good idea! I was still being sick on the way to the start line. However I thought I would salvage some points, so not too disheartened with the time considering”.

Davies finished by his standards a lowly fifth in the Veterans in +11:19, a Series he leads, and that illness saw his lead slashed to just 10 points thanks to a superb ride by Pauline Hughes. The Revolutions Racing rider made it a 1-2 in the Veteran’s with a winning +13:49 well supported by Stuart Proctor, runner-up in +13:09 as well as the overall runner-up with an actual 1:08:57. But Hughes wasn’t finished there as she took the win in the Women’s too with a superb 1:15:58 to stretch her Women’s Series lead to 80 points over Charlotte Chapman after the Nova Raider finished third in 1:19:45 just 12 seconds behind Mid Shropshire Wheelers’ Jenny York despite this being her first attempt at the distance. Hughes commented: “I felt on good form and was thrilled with my time and the Women’s win amongst such a competitive field”. When told she had also won the Veterans she added: “What a lovely surprise – I did not realise I had secured the Veterans’ top spot too”!

Proctor meanwhile was another rider surprised by his form after a heavy weekend’s racing saw him ride a 25 the day before. Undertaking these distances on two consecutive days would normally affect the level of form, but with Proctor seemingly getting stronger as the season has progressed he surprised himself with his double runner-up slots, stating: “I did the Stone Wheelers the day before so I was expecting to be tired, but my legs seemed to have turned up for me! A great morning for it, the weather was kind and blowing in the right direction for the return leg – the tailwind from Tern Hill was very welcome! Many thanks to the organisers and marshals; it was a really good event”.
