A boisterous SCCA Awards Presentation saw well over 80 riders converge on Ellerdine Village Hall to cheer on 2024’s prize winners following a social kindly and efficiently catered by Village Hall committee members. SCCA Chair Helen Tudor opened proceedings with the good news that Crudgington roundabout had been completed shortly before, meaning a tricky season of riders enduring “Battlefield fatigue” and the loss of both 100 mile events. However, she moved on to state the overwhelming success of the season – the introduction of dedicated Road Bike competitions which saw five new trophies on display, and which is the fastest-growing area of time trialling; together with two new Veteran’s trophies. She thanked Ellerdine Village Hall for their tremendous season-long support before introducing a familiar face to present the medals and trophies – new SCCA President Rita Taylor.
Biggest winner of the day was Wrekinsport’s Hayley Wells who took home an incredible nine trophies in a glittering season including Female Best all Rounder, and both the Friction Hydraulics and SB Series Female trophies and the Female Hill Climb Trophy showing both her tenacity to try any discipline and adaptability. This was made even more apparent after, with Chris Riley, she not only won the Mixed Team 2-Up Trophy but also became the first female to take the overall 2-Up Trophy as well in her first full season of time trialling. Riley proved more than handy too, also taking the Veteran’s Best all Rounder and organising his club, Paramount CRT to a first-ever win of the Top Club Award.
Paramount and Wrekinsport riders featured heavily in the awards in a season notable for the friendly competition between the clubs, with Simon Romei taking home the much-prized Cliff Ash Best all Rounder Trophy, The Shropshire Veterans Championship Shield, 50 mile Trophy, and The Jim Heath Trophy; whilst Tomos Hales captured The Shropshire Championship Shield, The Inter-Club Trophy, and The Gordon Davies Trophy.
The popular 4-Up competition was keenly fought, with Bridgnorth CC taking an astounding win of both The Road Bike 4-Up Trophy as well as the overall John Farr 4-Up Shield ahead of riders on full time trial rigs; whilst Paramount defended the Female 4-Up Trophy successfully.
