Hafren CC 10

A glorious, practically windless evening made for fast times on a fast course as Dan Watts took an excellent win in Round 6 of the SB Sports Injuries Series on a night of personal bests. Promoted by Hafren CC on their popular Berriew-Welshpool ‘out and back’ 10 mile course Watts gained victory by exactly 30 seconds from Series leader Chris Halford as he looks to make up ground in the challenge for the Championship. Watts stopped the watch in a course personal best 20 minute 17 seconds and clearly enjoyed the favourable conditions to the miserable ones greeting riders in the previous round. He moved up to third spot in the Overall table on the strength of his ride, with a training overload gaining clear benefits: “A stark contrast to the last rounds conditions, we were greeted by almost perfect conditions which made for a fast night and an enjoyable evening. I’m really happy to get a course PB and the win. Having done five races in eight days I’m beginning to get sharper, which is a good sign for future races“.

Series leader Halford took the runners-up spot both Overall in 20:47 and in the Veteran’s Championship too with a fine +5:49, just nine seconds behind Veteran’s winner Deb Hutson-Lumb and 44 ahead of Tony Harvey. This was the Wrekinsport rider’s first racing excursion to Mid-Wales and he was immediately struck by the condition of the road: “It’s a bit different from a lot of the Shropshire courses! My first time on the course, a really great surface to race on. However I didn’t pace it too well, but conditions were so good I got away with it. I can’t wait to ride that course again“. Halford holds a 10 point lead in both Overall and Veteran’s Series from Hafren CC’s Ian Nisbett, who took 4th on actual in 21:44 and 5th on Veteran’s Standard in +4:47.

Halford wasn’t the only rider gaining their first experience of this great course, with Dean Callister helping himself to third Overall in a strong 21:33 in his first year entering Shropshire Championships. This was a personal best for the newly-signed Nova Raider who now occupies an excellent 5th spot in the Overall Championship. He stated: “My first time on the course and I loved it, great roads and a nice warm evening. I paced it well and it was a new 10 mile personal best for me. Thanks Hafren CC for a great event, looking forward to the next“.

Whilst Hutson-Lumb took the win in the Veteran’s event with +5:58 she finished runner-up in the Women’s Championship behind Nova Raiders’ team mate Charlotte Chapman. Hutson-Lumb ended her evening in a strong 18th spot Overall thanks to her 23:29 effort and lies in fourth spot in the Veteran’s Championship and second in the Women’s Championship, narrowing the gap to Louise Hurdley who finished 4th on the evening in 26:11. This was another course best, with a delighted Hutson-Lumb commenting “I was really pleased to get the Veteran’s win and a PB for me on that course by over a minute. I’ve been working on my pacing this season and its definitely paying off. Really good evening, and big kudos to Charlie Price youngest rider putting out a fabulous ride“. Hutson-Lumb’s comments referred to 13 year-old Mid Shropshire Wheeler Price, recording his fastest ever 10 with 28:08.

Meanwhile Chapman was making her 2019 debut in the SB Series, and immediately set out her stall with a fine Women’s win of 20 seconds in a fast 23:09. She commented: “It was a speedy night! My legs weren’t feeling fast, but I managed to get round pretty quick in the end. I have to mention my Dad who got a huge PB (and also paid for my entry!) and thanks to those who ran the event, it was a great night“. Dad Steve helped himself to 17th spot from the 34 competitors with an excellent 23:26.

Henri Bedford stretched his SB Junior Series lead to an amazing 50 points with another personal best by 23 seconds – but it wasn’t enough to win the Junior event. Bedford stopped the watch on 22:34, but 30 seconds ahead Hafren CC’s Sam Holwill took the win in a superb 22:04 to take 5th spot Overall on his home course: He commented: “Winning at my home event is always nice, but I was a bit gutted to miss out on a sub-22 by only five seconds“.
