Oswestry Paragon CC 10.
Round 9 of the SB Sports Injuries Series attracted a quality field of 49 riders on a glorious summer’s evening looking to compete in Oswestry Paragon’s Hilly 19. However with a road closure due to an accident shutting the A495 for several hours that field instead faced a shortened 10 mile event, with Kirk Vickers coming out on top of the pile. The SCCA Private Member stopped the watch on an impressive 19 minutes 50 seconds, a winning margin of 36 seconds in his first appearance of the SB Series in 2018. Vickers had had an attempt at the 19 mile course record in his sights but those hopes were temporarily dashed, though he indicated he would return, stating: “I was pleased with my performance and time despite being held up behind traffic, I’ll be back for more“.
Vickers beat Rhino Velo team mate Matt Garthwaite into the runners-up spot for the first time this season showing the quality of his ride with Garthwaite having won all five previous rounds he had entered. He revealed however that he had heavy legs after a particularly gruelling week on the bike and was relived to face a shortened course: “I was glad it was switched to a 10 as my legs were tired from the previous day’s road race league and the National 12 hour only 5 days earlier“. That Garthwaite managed a superb 296 miles in that 12 hours shows his adaptability between perseverance and explosive power.
In third spot another SCCA Private Member posted a personal course best after tinkering with his set-up as Dan Watts crossed the line in an excellent 20:54. Watts was fully aware of the quality ahead of him in the standings and acknowledged as such in his comments: “I was trying a few new things ahead of the Cyclotherapy Shropshire Championship 25. It didn’t work out overly well, but even if it had I wouldn’t have been able to match Kirk and Matt anyway. I’m still happy with a sub-21 ride, a course PB for me“.
Watts wasn’t the only rider trying out a position adjustment with Oswestry Paragon’s Kieran Morris blasting around the course in 23:47 to take the Junior win, 57 seconds ahead of Junior Series leader Henri Bedford. Morris narrowed the gap at the top of the standings to 12 points despite feeling uncomfortable due to that position change: “Disaster – I messed with my position and got it all wrong. My home course. Great riding by Kirk, awesome time. I’m looking forward to the Cyclotherapy Shropshire Championship 25 now. It was a great atmosphere going past The Boote. Thank you marshals“.
In the SB Veterans Series it was a 1-2 for Marches CC as two Septuagenarian local riders made their SB debuts iry n 2018, with Stuart Mitchell taking the win with +4:24. Mitchell has finally transitioned to a dedicated time trial bike and is seeing the dividends in his results. He beat team mate Paddy Crisp by 13 seconds to take the maximum 20 points on offer and put his success down to that new bike: “My first year on a time trial bike -it’s never too late to give it a go“!
Crisp meanwhile pushed Veterans Series leader Ian Nisbett out by two seconds. Just one year older than Mitchell his response was tongue-in-cheek: “I’m happy with the result although it was a bit windy on the way down. I still can’t beat Stuart, but he is a lot younger than me“! Nisbett’s 16 point tally for his +4:09 standard extended his Veteran’s Series lead to an almost inconceivable 90 points with this Championship clearly a target for 2018. He wasn’t finished there either, stretching his Overall Series lead to 16 points from Ed Middleton after finishing 4th in 22:14 26 seconds ahead of the Nova Raider.
In the SB Women’s Series it was a straight head-to head between two Oswestry Paragon riders with Helen Tudor taking the win from Lucy Hammonds. Tudor stopped the watch on 27:48 and moved up to second place in the Women’s standings as a result. She stated: “It was a shame we couldn’t do the 19, but under the circumstances running the 10 was best course of action. Breezy conditions made it tough going and hard to get into a rhythm. Nice to get some points, thanks Mid Shropshire Wheelers for helping with marshalling“.
