Mid Shropshire Wheelers and National Youth Championship Qualifying 10

If there was a way to make a huge entrance in your first ever 10 mile time trial George Mills-Keeling certainly found it as the CC Bridgnorth RWG rider saw off the opposition in the Mid Shropshire Wheelers and National Youth Championship Qualifying 10 at Waters Upton. The 17 year old made an audacious first appearance in a County time trial in Round 9 of the Friction Hydraulics Series on an almost perfect afternoon where many riders posted personal best times thanks to conditions and the lovely new Peplow surface.

Stopping the watch on 20 minutes 52 seconds Mills-Keeling pushed out a strong challenge from an experienced rider on the comeback trail – Matt Davies by a good margin of 16 seconds. The youngster was also in a league of his own as he moved straight to third spot Overall in the Friction Junior Series. He commented: “20:52 for my first ever 10 mile time trial! It was great fun, and something to build on as looking at my position I think there is a lot more aero I could get – maybe…

Davies meanwhile has had some time away from time trialling and was more than satisfied with posting 21:08 to push Chris Halford into third by 30 seconds. The Holohan Coaching rider is always a name to feature near the top of the standings and particularly so when he has his form full sharpened. He stated: “A fantastic event, and I’m very grateful for all of those involved in putting it on. I couldn’t be happier with second and I learnt a little more about pacing myself. I was struggling with the changing winds, but that was the same for everyone. A great event“!

Wrekinsport’s Chris Halford had plenty to take home from the day as he not only captured third place overall with 21:38, he also took the win in the Veteran’s competition with a fine +4:58 and led Wrekinsport to a team victory with solid support from Rich Smith and Tomos Hales, with Smith recording a personal best 22:48. The quietly-spoken Halford lets his legs do the talking normally as he ploughed his huge 60-tooth chain ring around the flattest 10 in Shropshire, but he was more than happy with the quality of the back-up from his club mates, commenting: “I was really pleased to get the Team victory. Some great times posted – and we didn’t get wet“!

With Hafren CC’s Bryn Davies out of action for the rest of the season it was only a matter of time before someone overhauled him in the Series standings – with team mate Ian Nisbett taking over at the top of the Overall Championship and Nova Raiders’ Dean Dovey grabbing the Veteran’s Series lead – just. Nisbett finished equal fourth Overall in 22:01 and this was enough to see him jump 20 points ahead of Davies. Meanwhile Dovey has a great afternoon out, finishing runner-up to Halford in the Veteran’s in +4:42, vitally 12 seconds ahead of Nisbett as this gave him five additional points and the narrowest gap possible at the top of the Veteran’s standings. Dovey commented: “The weather was good and I got my preparation bang on, but I was disappointed with my power output. The result for the Veteran’s was far better than I expected. Well done to Chris, another top ride, and to fellow racers – lots of course personal bests were had“.

Some of those course bests came in the Women’s Championship with the entire top three of Charlotte Chapman, Emma Serjeant and Jenny Newton all setting new benchmarks, showing the heightened level of competition – with the top two split by just six seconds. Chapman took full advantage of the absence of Women’s Series leader Deb Hutson-Lumb to narrow the gap at the top of the Women’s standings to 55 points, and was delighted with her new best time of 24:01, commenting: “My first time on the course without the infamous ‘Peplow Pavé’ and I can’t say I missed it! I’m very happy to take the Women’s win and get a course PB, it was exciting to have some close competition from Emma too! A great ride from Jenny – taking over a minute off her course PB too“.

Newton is in superb form, and having taken a break from competition she took third spot in 25:33. Serjeant meanwhile goes from strength to strength and nearly caused an upset with her excellent effort of 24:07. She stated: “That was close! Well done Charlotte, a course PB for me too with the lovely new Peplow surface, but I wasn’t sure whether the wind was helping or hindering me. Thank you to Mid Shropshire Wheelers“.

Junior Series leader Kieran Morris piled on the pressure at the top of the table despite being usurped by Mills-Keeling. Morris tied with Nisbett for equal fourth Overall in 22:01 – a time which would normally win maximum Junior points hands down, although he was full of praise for the Bridgnorth youngster, commenting: “I’m not surprised by George, he’s a class act – a great ride by him. I was disappointed in my ride though, I’ve been faster when the road was full of pot holes. Hopefully I’ll find my form soon. Thanks to Dave Mellor and the helpers – a great event as always“.
