A first-time scratch man lived up to the billing in the blue riband event of Shropshire time trialling, The Cyclotherapy Shropshire Championship 25 – whilst the Women’s race was full of drama. Dan Watts took Championship Gold and the Freeston Trophy by a big winning margin of 2 minutes 28 seconds in Round 9 of the Friction Hydraulics Series held on the fastest 25 course in the area, Berriew – Four Crosses. Red hot conditions greeted competitors, with no wind meaning it felt hard all the way around. Watts’ time of 52 minutes 24 seconds beat reigning 25 mile Champion Bryn Davies into the runner-up spot on his home course, showing the strength of his ride benefiting from a position tweak.

Watts had the spur of a chasing tandem, powered by Tandem Competition record holders Howard and Becky Lewis to keep him focused. He commented: “I was really pleased with my ride and the win, I finally managed to concentrate for an entire 25 mile time trial which makes a pleasant change! The conditions made for a hard evening where there was no let up, and what seemed like no tail wind at any point. I’m glad I lived up to the expectations of a scratch man in a time trial field as it’s a first for me – and I was pretty thankful the tandem didn’t catch me“.

Hafren CC’s Davies took Overall Silver with a fabulous effort of 54:52 – and made it a brace by taking Veteran’s 25 Championship Gold with an excellent +11:59. Davies wasn’t finished there however, taking over the Friction Veteran’s lead from team mate Ian Nisbett, though seemed more focused on the post-race refreshments which always receive glowing commendations at this event: “I was pleased enough with the result, no chance of catching Dan who was in a different class. Not my fastest on the course, but a tough night in the heat, thanks to the organisers, marshals – and of course for the fantastic cake“!

Matt Gibbons led an impressive showing from Nova Raiders who took home a fabulous haul of medals as well as extending their lead in the Top Club Award to 260 points thanks to taking five places in the Top 10. Gibbons took Overall Bronze in a fine time of 55:25 and led Nova Raiders to Team Gold with support from Andy Rose and Scott Harris with their combined efforts of 2:48:33 outpacing Mid Shropshire Wheelers by 8:41. Gibbons gave credit to the riders who beat him but was ecstatic about the team honours: “Really good rides from Dan and Bryn who took well deserved top spots. I’m really happy with individual Bronze and couldn’t have done anymore. Delighted for Team Gold with such a big margin of victory with solid rides from Scott and Andy, with others close on their heels“.

Rose wasn’t finished there taking Veteran’s 25 Silver in an impressive +11:00 and a big course personal best of 57:02 in the process. He added: “I was over the moon with my time as it was nearly a two minute Personal Best on the course. I’m delighted to have won Team Gold and totally surprised to have won Veteran’s Silver. Conditions were tough in both directions and my legs were still tired from racing the previous weekend. A great turnout from the Raiders and a fantastic team effort. Many thanks to the  marshals and officials for putting on a great race“. Harris, who was just 13 seconds behind his team mate added: “A brilliant course. I was happy with my race, it’s great to get Team Gold. Thanks to everyone for putting on a great event. I’m proud of all the Raiders putting in some brilliant performances“.

Taking the last of the Veteran’s medals was Mid Shropshire Wheelers’ Craig Ball, with his +10:47 earning him Bronze after pushing another Nova Raider Deb Hutson-Lumb out of the Veteran’s medal slots by just two seconds. He was pleased with his evening’s work on his first appearance of the year, stating: “I was very happy to get 3rd Veteran. A great course, but I was waiting for the tail wind after half way and it never arrived“!

A damaged bike and a wrong turn both played a part in the Women’s Championship with Charlotte Chapman taking Gold and The Brian and Gill Morrison Trophy – in spite of being restricted to one gear. The Nova Raider posted a great effort of 1:00:26 despite that handicap with the adrenalin of the panic moment getting her around the course which features a number of drags. She said: “It didn’t go to plan as my bike broke and I had to ride the course single speed! I’m glad I didn’t give up and got round in a pretty decent time. Thank you to the people who helped me in my moment of panic and everyone who ran the event, a great event“.

There was a surprise package taking Women’s Silver with Oswestry Paragon’s Lou Williams coming good in her first ever 25. Williams has an Ironman background and posted a superb first attempt of 1:03:23, and seemed to enjoy her evening out commenting: “Well, I’m not sure what to say as it came as a massive shock at my first time at a 25 time trial. I was very nervous, so I would like to say a massive thank you to the marshals for their support – what a great event“!

Despite missing out on Veteran’s Bronze Deb Hutson-Lumb took Women’s Bronze – but was left rueing a wrong turn into Tesco that cost her the Silver medal after finishing just one second behind Williams. The offset second roundabout has trapped unwary riders before despite being heavily marshalled, with Hutson-Lumb momentarily unsettled by her mistake: “I was pleased with my ride despite taking the wrong exit on the second roundabout – I think I was off to Tesco for a cold beer in all that heat! I got back on track and managed to stay focussed on the return leg this time. Another great event, and my apologies again to the marshals for my expletives on that roundabout“!

Kieran Morris earned himself Junior Gold with a good effort of 1:02:45, but wasn’t happy with his ride on a course that is turning out to be his nemesis. His post-race comments reflected his mixed feelings: “A great event, the marshals were fabulous and very supportive. Great rides everyone. However it was my worst ride of the season – it was a disaster and I felt terrible. I’m disappointed as I wanted to put the demons I have with this course behind me. Hopefully next year“.

Morris’ namesake Sam took the Jack Pitchford Trophy for the fastest Under-21,  finishing a strong fourth in his first year as a Senior. Morris set a fine time of 55:48 and on this form will definitely be one to watch. He commented: “A great event, really well marshalled. I had a good ride, a solid minute quicker than last year so I can’t complain! Nice to see everyone again and have a catch up“.
