The overall and female course records were smashed in Round 8 of the SB Sports Injuries Series, with Tomos Hales lopping five seconds off Henri Bedford’s record from 2021 and Wrekinsport team mate Hayley Wells slicing a giant 10 minutes 45 seconds off Leonie Keeling’s female record set in one of the limited races allowed in 2020. Hales stopped the watch on 43 minutes 9 seconds in North Shropshire Wheelers Hawkstone Hilly 19 in glorious conditions which made all the difference to an event previously run in March and susceptible to the weather which saw the event cancelled in 2023 and 2024. Hales stated: “With the Hawkstone Hilly moved to a warm summer’s evening instead of a cold spring morning I knew I could get a quick time. I have always wanted to do this course, but the last few years have been plagued by cancellations so it was good to ride it. I enjoyed the hilly sections past the Follies, but found it tough the second time around. I had to hang on riding the rough down hill to the finish, but super happy to get the course record – thanks North Shropshire Wheelers for hosting, it was great to be held on a warm summer’s evening”.

Hales opened up his commanding defence of his SB Series title to 70 points as Wells took a strong runner-up spot as well as the female win in 46:40 moved up to second in the overall standings on the strength of this ride, now holding an even more impressive 96 point lead in the SB Female Series. Her post-race comments show that she had been anticipating finally being able to trying out this tough and technical circuit after the brace of cancellations: “An event I was looking forward to tackling as I do love a hilly course! It was a beautiful evening and the conditions meant we got some welcome assistance up the hill. I was delighted to have taken the course record; and many thanks to North Shropshire Wheelers for a great evening of racing”!

Seven of the 15 strong field were making their first appearance in the SB Series in 2025 – with some making an immediate impression at their first attempt at any event as Paramount’s Mitchell Fletcher helped himself to third spot in 49:42. He commented: “I am relatively new to Time Trials with this being the longest one I have taken part in. I was last to go in the running order, but it gave me a good field to try and hunt down. With a strong start, I went after the riders in front, showing a strong performance on the climbs. I managed to fight off cramp at the start of the second lap before entering the A49. I was super pleased with the result with such a strong field of riders”.

Another first time entrant to the 2025 SB Series took the win in the Veterans standings as North Shropshire Wheelers’ Jamie Rossiter saw his actual 54:32 convert to -1:16 on Veterans Standard, beating team mate Keith Broadbent by 1:49 in an event where no Veteran beat their standard, showing the toughness of this course. Rossiter revealed his well versed in the trials of this circuit however: “I live on the course so benefited from local knowledge in the dry and breezy conditions. It is a good, challenging, hilly course that offered good competition between road and time trial bikes; an enjoyable and well organised event”.

Broadbent didn’t go home empty-handed though as he took the win in the SB Road Bike standings, with his actual time of 56:55 converting to 53:00 on handicap, seeing off SB Road Bike leader Colin Wells by 52 seconds. Wells however opened his lead over Ashley Kirkham to 60 points with another solid performance.
