Mid Shropshire Wheelers – GHS Championship 10

The rider currently setting the Shropshire and South Staffordshire Road Race League alight turned his hand to his first time trial of the season and saw immediate dividends in Round 8 of the Friction Hydraulics Series as Kirk Vickers took the win in tough conditions in the Mid Shropshire Wheelers-George Herbert Stancer Championship 10.

Vickers stormed around the Waters Upton-Hodnet course in 20 minutes 18 seconds in an event blighted by a strong, gusting wind and occasional heavy rain to take the maximum 60 points on offer as a reward for his efforts. He stated: “I performed well in tough conditions and my first time trial of the year. Hats off to marshals and helpers in the event“.

Vickers beat Bryn Davies into the runner-up spot by 1:13 with the Hafren CC rider posting an excellent 21:31 and winning the Friction Veterans event with a fine +4:47, 38 seconds ahead of North Shropshire Wheelers’ David Drew. Davies commented: “Not my fastest on the course but an improvement, with my time closer to last year’s times, so I was happy with that and to get first Veteran. A great ride by Kirk who was in a different league. Thanks to Mid Shropshire Wheelers and marshals for a great event“.

Davies narrowed the gap to just 20 points behind Hafren team mate Ian at the top of the Veterans standing after an incredibly rare four-way tie for third between Nisbett, Richard Kay, Jenny York and Ian Pollard, who all finished on +3:55. North Shropshire Wheeler Kay also took third spot Overall with an excellent 22:18 and like many suffered for his sport in the conditions: “My heart sank when the heavens opened, but to be fair I always go well in the rain. Despite being held up briefly before the roundabout I was very happy with my efforts. Many thanks to the Mids for a great event as always“.

Things might have been close in the Friction Veterans Series but that wasn’t the case in the Women’s Series with an all-Mid Shropshire Wheelers field seeing 19 year-old Hetty Niblett take a huge win in her first appearance of the 2018 Series. Niblett beat nearest challenger Lucy Hart by nearly three minutes with a superb time of 22:54 – good enough for 7th spot Overall showing the quality of her ride. That effort was all the more impressive given the road surface at Peplow and the effect of the wind, which Niblett punched through effectively. She stated: “I had to really concentrate on the outward leg to keep the pressure on the bad tarmac sections and, yes, it was a really hard return leg. A big headwind with some nasty gusts! I was really happy with my ride and a power personal best so couldn’t have asked for more“!

The event included the Regional George Herbert Stancer 10 mile Championship, attracting a solid field of Under-17’s looking to qualify for the National Championship in September. A dozen youngsters recorded some strong efforts, with Oswestry Paragon’s Kieran Morris coming out at the head of the Friction Junior standings with a fine effort of 22:39 that took equal 5th spot Overall. Morris, who is on the come back trail after injury took over the sole lead of the Junior Series thanks to his efforts pushing Mid Shropshire Wheelers’ Ronnie Tse out by 58 seconds. Morris commented: “It’s great to be riding again after my accident. I’m still not 100%, so I was happy to take the win. It was windy and wet out there on the way back to the finish. Great organising from Mid Shropshire Wheelers, thanks to everyone that helped“.

Tse meanwhile picked a tricky afternoon for his first race on tribars and saw immediate benefits, setting a personal best 23:27 for 11th Overall. He commented: “I was really happy to set a PB, and was glad it wasn’t too cold on the day. My first time using aero bars and I’m totally mind-blown by the difference they make. I went a bit too conservatively on the way out though to prepare for the headwind. Looking forward to finals in September, thanks to Mid Shropshire Wheelers for organising“.
