R5 SB Sports Injuries Series: Hafren CC 10 – report

The lead of three categories in the SB Sports Injuries Series changed hands on a balmy night at Berriew in Round 5, the Hafren CC 10. Running on the fast Berriew – Welshpool course the leading riders came away with a favourable impression of this new out-and-back, receiving it’s first use in this form for a County level event.

Taking the Overall win Matt Gibbons made a stunning debut into the 2018 Series to stop the watch on 21 minutes 14 seconds and claim the maximum 20 points on offer – and for once everything went just right. With the same roads forming part of the upcoming Hafren CC Open 25 as well as the Cyclotherapy Shropshire Championship 25 Gibbons gained a good insight for the future, commenting: “Things went to plan on the night, which rarely happens. A nice reconnoitre for future events, and I appreciate the efforts of Hafren putting on the race. The cake was as good as always“!

Kieran Morris was just as enthusiastic about the course, stopping the watch on 21:42 to capture both the Overall runners-up spot as well as the Junior win. Morris elevated himself to the top of the Junior SB Series on the strength of his ride and stated: “A great course, it’s nice to ride something different. However I found it tough both ways. A great ride by Matt, I would’ve like to of been a bit closer but he was on fire. Thanks to Hafren CC for a fabulously organised event“.

Hafren CC’s Ian Nisbett knew all about the qualities of the course having ridden club events in it’s first use last year. He put that knowledge to good use to finish third in 22:01 and not only extend his Veteran’s Series lead thanks to a third placed +4:22 but move up to Joint first place in the Overall standings level with Ed Middleton, who finished fifth on the night in 22:25. Nisbett however was battling against the after-effects of the SB Shropshire Championship 50, stating: “It was nice to be racing on familiar roads again. My overall effort and pacing was good, although I did have a couple of spells where I couldn’t seem to maintain an even pace and the speed dropped off – probably some fatigue in my legs from the 50! I was pleased with the time, but should really have gone another 20 or 30 seconds quicker. Maybe next time“.

isbett didn’t have things all his own way in the Veteran’s Series thanks to excellent rides from Mid Shropshire Wheelers’ Andy Hazell and Nova Raiders’ Andy Rose. Hazell made his first appearance in the SB Series for 2018 and immediately set about his familiar winning ways, recording a fine +5:16. He was surprised with the win stating: “I didn’t feel I went that well, I was expecting more on the new course, so pleased to get the win“!

Meanwhile Andy Rose posted a Veteran’s standard of +4:28 to take the runner-up spot in that category – and a big personal best on actual of 22:17 to astonish himself by placing fourth Overall. The  delighted Nova Raider stated: “My first time on the course and I loved it. I was shocked and very pleased to ride a 10 mile Personal Best“.

Rose’s team mate Charlotte Chapman was also new to the course and took a fine win in the Women’s Series – taking over the Women’s lead from mother Jane. Chapman ended the evening on an impressive 23:21 for 11th spot overall amongst a 35-strong field, beating Hafren CC’s Louise Downward into the runner-up spot on 25:58. Chapman commented: “My first time on the course so I wasn’t sure how it would go. It turns out it’s a fast course! I was very happy to see my first 23 of the year. Well done to Andy Rose on a new PB and thanks to Hafren for putting on a fabulous event- I shall be returning“!
