Shropshire Cycling Clubs Association Spring 10 No.3

Matt Garthwaite registered another commanding win in Round 3 of the SB Sports Injuries Series at Waters Upton as the SCCA Private Member coped best with a strong headwind that slowed progress on the return leg from Hodnet. Garthwaite’s warm-up routine helped crystallise his race game plan as he pushed hard on the ‘out’ leg to stop the watch on an impressive 20 minutes 47 seconds, 5 seconds faster than in Round 2, lifting himself up to the runners-up spot in the SB Series overall. He stated: “My legs felt like lead as I warmed up towards Shawbirch, and I was only managing to ride at about 20mph. Thankfully on making my way back to the start I realised it was quite windy which gave me a boost. The out leg was nice, and thankfully the return leg wasn’t as bad as I thought“.

Garthwaite wasn’t the only rider showing some impressive form as 17 year-old Kieran Morris lowered his personal best for the second week in a row, slicing a huge 54 seconds off to finish in second place with an excellent 21:38. Morris was the fastest of the Juniors, moving up to 12 points behind Junior Series leader Jack Young who posted his third personal best in a row with an improvement of 14 seconds thanks to his 25:05 effort. Morris was pleased with his efforts, commenting: “After last week’s ride I was eager to prove there was more to come. I’m pretty happy with how it went, but I still think there’s more to come during the season. Thanks to all the organisers for putting on a quality race as usual“.

Round 1’s winner Ian Nisbett led the field home from the front, surprising the timekeeping team at the finish line with his fine turn of pace. The Hafren CC rider wound up third overall in 22:24, just three seconds slower than his Round 1 winning time and showing the ramp up in the level of competition. Nisbett suffered in the wind on the return leg, with the mile stretch after the road turns into the wind emerging from the tree cover at Peplow particularly vicious. He stated: “The return leg with its headwind didn’t seem too bad in the warm up, but I couldn’t get going after the turn and was really just hanging on for the last 5 minutes. Mind you, I wouldn’t have got near the two guys in first and second anyway, they were flying“!

Nisbett finished runner-up in the Veteran’s race lifting himself up to the same spot in the Veteran’s overall standings behind the winner Dave Wilson with +3:59 with a narrow two point gap. The North Shropshire Wheeler improved by 38 seconds to set a good winning margin with +4:21 and was happy with his ride, commenting: “I am very pleased with a 38 second improvement on last week’s ride. The wind on the exposed stretch on the way back was a bit hairy. I think that I am coming to terms with the 10 mile time trial this year“!

Personal Bests occurred in the Women’s race too with Charlotte Chapman slicing 29 seconds off her Round 2 personal best to win. Chapman had the carrot of mother Jane starting two minutes in front and managed to overtake her and beat father Steve too by 23 seconds with her 24:21 ride to go home with the bragging rights. Jane was happy with her efforts too as she took over the lead of the SB Women’s Series with Charlotte just four points behind. She stated: “A new skin suit and a tweaked position seemed to do the trick. I was very happy to knock almost 30 seconds off last week’s time, and a course personal best for me! It was fantastic to see so many Nova’s out and some very speedy times“.
