SCCA Autumn 10 No.3 2018

With five medals undecided going into the final round of The SB Sports Injuries Series riders who had already hung up their time trial bikes for the season dusted them off to seal those final awards – whilst Shropshire’s longest-standing timekeeper hung up her watches after her final County event to end an incredible 46 years of dedicated service to the sport. First and second were split by a single second as Chris Halford took a narrow win to seal Overall SB Series Bronze to add to his SB Veteran’s Silver.

The Wrekinsport rider had stopped racing but knew he had to protect his position and did so in some style, posting a 22 minute 26 second effort and having to ramp up the watts to beat an on-fire Tim Beardmore. Halford coped best with a chilly, tough Northern headwind which blighted the longest leg to Hodnet and which sapped many riders’ strength. He knew he had been pushed by Beardmore, revealing: “There were really tough conditions. Credit to Tim, I had to put out a power personal best to beat him“. Halford also took the Veteran’s win with a fine +4:06, this time six seconds ahead of Beardmore when the age-related Standards had been applied showing just why he has won Veteran’s Silver even with a late entry to this Series.

Beardmore meanwhile is in superb form and had Nova Raiders’ team mate Andy Rose in his sights as the pair went head-to-head for Veteran’s Bronze. Beardmore needed to beat Rose by three Veteran’s places to tie on points and for that medal to be decided on pure speed, but with Rose also dusting off his bike having hung his wheels up several weeks ago the difference was just one place, with Beardmore registering a fine +4:00 to take Veteran’s runner-up on the day against Rose’s +3:02 which tied for third.

Beardmore commented: “A little frustrating to miss out on the win by such a small margin, but considering I was off the bike for three months at the start of the season, I’m really happy with how the season has ended. I don’t think it was a particularly quick day with the headwind on the way out, but I was happy with the way I paced it. A big thanks as ever to the marshals and timekeepers, and well done to all medal winners in the Series“.

Rose meanwhile was relieved to have retained enough muscle memory to turn an unexpected pedal in anger, and was looking forward to a delayed break: “I’m very pleased to have won Veterans Bronze having just pipped Tim who is in blistering form at the moment. Conditions were tough going out, headwind and rain from Peplow. I’m pleased to have finished the season! My thanks again to all the helpers“.

Thanking the helpers who put on a huge season-long programme of events is a time trialling tradition, but those thoughts were crystallised by SCCA Chair Helen Tudor, who took the Women’s win with 27:44: “A tough afternoon battle out to Espley, and I didn’t get the tailwind I expected on the return leg. Not the ideal way to finish my season! Thanks to all who made it happen, but especially to Gill Morrison who was timing her last event for the SCCA“. An almost constant feature at County events week in, week out, Gill will be sorely missed by many as she looks forward to a well-deserved retirement.

With one final Women’s medal to be resolved SCCA Private Member Sarah Grant saw immediate dividends in her first year of membership to take Women’s Bronze. Only joining midway through the season the ebullient Grant has put in some powerful performances and will surely be challenging for honours in 2019. She stated: “Lovely for me to win the Bronze this year after a good season of racing. Thank you to everyone who makes the racing possible“!

Another rider making a late entry into the Series was Junior winner James Satoor of Mid Shropshire Wheelers, who stopped the watch on 24:28 to take a strong 5th spot Overall. Satoor beat SB Junior Champion Henri Bedford by 38 seconds having won both Rounds he has entered and sounded a warning that he will be a more regular feature in 2019: “It was another well organised event. It was really windy, which made it very hard going out, but overall I was pleased to get the Junior win, and I look forward to riding more time trials next year! Thanks again to the organisers and marshals“!

With Satoor’s team mate Jack Young looking to seal Junior Silver he did just that thanks to a fine 25:49 ride, though the 14 year-old suffered in the wind. He stated: “I’m really pleased, the race was hard. Well done to everyone else who took part“. Young’s efforts meant Oswestry Paragon’s Kieran Morris had to settle for Junior Bronze, though he was gracious with his comments: “It was nice to pick up a medal. Well done to Henri and Jack on first and second. Next season I’m going to concentrate on road racing, but will do the odd round when it fits. Congratulations to all the prize winners, and thanks to everyone involved“.
