SCCA Autumn 10 No.1 2018.
With seven County medals still in play pre-race riders after a late season opportunity to race and compete for silverware had to endure a through soaking in Round 16 of the SB Sports Injuries Series, with the Waters Upton course aptly named. The first of three SCCA season-closing Autumn 10’s attracted a field of 22 riders, with two further medals settled and potential winners tightening their grips on those medal positions. Coming out on top of the pile was Chris Halford, who stopped the watch on 21 minutes 57 seconds, beating Tim Beardmore by 26 seconds.
Halford has been a late entrant to the Series but with this win elevated himself into the Overall Bronze medal position ahead of Matt Garthwaite, who is now the only rider who could potentially overhaul the Wrekinsport rider. But Halford has gone even better in the SB Veteran’s Series, taking his 6th win in this competition and sealing Veteran’s Silver thanks to a fine +4:30 standard, leaving him with a definite sense of ‘What might have been’ if he had entered the Series earlier. Normally economical with his words, he stated: “I was pleased with the win. My body didn’t like the cold and the wet as I was 60 watts down. Credit to the people standing out in those awful conditions“.
Halford isn’t the only rider in fine late-season form with Nova Raiders’ Beardmore crossing the line in 22:23 to take the Overall runner-up spot and in +4:04 to take the same position in the Veteran’s race. Beardmore hauled himself up to 5th spot in the Veteran’s standings and now lies just six points off the Bronze medal position jointly occupied by Beardmore’s team mate Andy Rose and Halford’s team mate Mark Griffiths. This is a very tight situation which will be fascinating to observe over the final two rounds. Beardmore commented: “The weather conditions weren’t the best and I struggled a bit on the out leg to find a rhythm, not helped by traffic before the island. I felt good on the way back where the wind wasn’t as bad as I had expected. I’m happy with my time on this course though. A big thanks to Dave and Jenny York for timekeeping and my Nova team mates for marshalling“.
Rose finished one place behind Beardmore in the Veteran’s, taking third spot with a fine +3:37, 14 ahead of visiting rider Steven Prince when the age-related standard was applied and will be going all out to preserve his small points differential in this Championship in the final two rounds, as evidenced by his comments: “I gave it 100% to try and go under 23 minutes and only just missed out. So I was a bit disappointed, however considering how cold and wet it was I was generally pleased. Well done to Chris and Tim who are on top form, they were certainly flying. Thanks again to all the volunteers“.
However those positions were reversed on actual, with Prince making it a worthwhile trip up from the south of the County finishing in 22:56, with Rose 12 seconds back. This was his first experience of the Waters Upton – Hodnet course, with the Fishface Cycles RT rider more usually seen at the County hill climbs. He stated: “I really enjoyed it, it was good to have a blast on the time trial bike between the hill climbs. I enjoyed the course despite the cold and rain! A big shout out to the marshals and starters for braving the weather for us all“.
In the Women’s Series Emma Serjeant put up a strong performance to finishing a very creditable 8th overall in 24:45 to take the Women’s win. Serjeant did enough to keep herself in the hunt for Women’s Bronze, with any one of six riders still potentially able to take that medal – though she suffered in conditions for her troubles: “It was a bit of a shock to the system to be racing in the wet! I’m pleased with a healthy improvement on last year’s time. Thank you to all the marshals and volunteers“.
Serjeant saw off the challenge of Oswestry Paragon’s Helen Tudor, who took the day’s other medal thanks to her 27:11 effort – Women’s Silver. She was another rider to endure conditions stoically, stating: “I found it tough going, though a great time by Emma for the Women’s win. Thanks to Nova Raiders for putting the event on. Another Series Silver to add to the collection“!
One second ahead of Serjeant and taking 7th spot Overall was Junior winner Henri Bedford. The 14 year-old has improved massively as the season has progressed a and showed just why he has already sealed SB Junior Gold with another win thanks to his 24:44 ride, pushing out a strong challenge from Mid Shropshire Wheelers’ Jack Young 19 seconds back and Evolve’s George Coombes 28 seconds back. These robust rides bode well for the young riders category, with Bedford commenting: “I was pleased with my win but found the course tough in the wet conditions. A big well done to Jack and George, and to all the volunteers for enabling the event to take place“.
