SCCA & WCTTCA 30.

Nine medals went down to the wire in a wild and windy finale of the Friction and Hydraulics Series, with Bryn Davies sealing Championship Gold just 17 hours after missing out due to a traffic hold up. Davis successfully retained his Friction title thanks to a County win in the SCCA & WCTTCA 30, taking place between Shawbirch and Market Drayton and rearranged from May due to road works issues. The Hafren CC rider took the maximum 60 points available to end the Series in style, winning by exactly a minute from Nova Raiders’ Tim Beardmore in a fine 1 hour 7 minutes 46 seconds.

Davies had the advantage of an unaffiliated fast minute man, Dyfan Evans of Wrexham RC to keep him keen, with Evans one of just two riders to better Davies’ effort in 1:06:53. That closeness, with the riders finishing just seven seconds apart on the road showed that Davies had to dig into his reserves to fend off the stiff challenge, suffering in the strong headwind which blighted the long 15 mile southerly leg from Market Drayton to Shawbirch. He commented: “It was great to get the County win after a tough previous day’s racing. I had a good tussle with Dyfan on the return but managed to find a bit extra at the end to keep from being taken by my minute man. Relieved to have taken County Gold this season as I struggled a bit in the first half of the season with illness and form, some tough competition this year making it a clincher to the end“.

Beardmore meanwhile was delighted to take County runner-up and is in good late season form after illness stopped him from racing in the early part of the year. Beardmore was one of three Nova Raiders in the Top 10 as the club again took the best points tally to successfully defend the Top Club Award for the second year in a row. He commented: “I was really pleased with how the race went, especially given the windy conditions. I saved as much as I dared for the return leg from the turn into a gusty head wind. There were some really tough sections between Epsley and Shawbirch but my power was good all the way to the finish. I am very happy with my time. Thanks as ever to all marshals and organisers – great preparation for the National 50 in two weeks time“.

Speaking on behalf of Nova Raiders Scott Harris summed up the club’s tremendous season: “We are really happy to take the Top Club Award again, we’ve had strong performances from all of the team this year against plenty of good opposition. Also great to see new members joining the racing side, and we are looking forward to the 2019 season“. That success was reflected in riders such as Matt Gibbons, who took Friction Series Silver behind Davies, and who alluded to some of the other trophies won by Nova during the year: “It’s been a long season and I ran out of gas a few weeks ago. Well done to Bryn who thoroughly deserves the overall win. I was delighted to pick up the 2-Up Gold with Scott and the Top Club Award with Nova Raiders this season“.

Gibbons wasn’t the only rider tired from racing with Davies’ team mate Ian Nisbett needed to take a few weeks off due to fatigue – but showing why he took Overall Bronze with a fine County 3rd spot in 1:09:42. The same 1-2-3 took Veteran’s honours on the day too, with Davies recording a fine +13:32, Beardmore +12:23 and Nisbett +11:12. Nisbett stated: “It was a bit of a shock as I haven’t raced since 1st August so I had to take a conservative approach. A challenging day with strong winds – though the tail wind sections were great! A little disappointed with my time, but congratulations to Bryn and Tim who put in strong rides“.

Medals were in the sights of another Nova Raider Deb Hutson-Lumb as she made it a brace of Bronzes thanks to winning the Women’s event and finishing a strong 4th Veteran on the day. This was enough to give the under-the-weather rider 3rd spot in both Women’s and Veteran’s competitions thanks to a fabulous 1:18:29 and +11:00 respectively. She stated: “I enjoyed the 30, but it was one tough headwind down to the Shawbirch turn. I look forward to riding this one again next year. Really pleased to secure 3rd place in the Women’s and Veterans in my first season back after a very long break“.

Hutson-Lumb couldn’t do enough to overall Women’s Silver medallist Helen Tudor however after a belated start to her season. Tudor finished 3rd Woman on the day 30 seconds behind Gold medallist Jenny York in 1:25:54 to take 50 points and equal her 2017 position. She commented: “It’s been a great season, it seems a long time since the very chilly start. I had a great battle with Jenny, and I’m sure Deb will challenge for Gold next year. Thanks to all who made it possible“.

The most open of all the Championships was the Friction Junior Series with none of the medals won going into the race. Taking Gold at the last gasp Revolutions Racing’s Henri Bedford was trying out at the distance for the first time and did enough to overhaul Kieran Morris by 20 points after finishing in 1:19:09. The 14 year-old had made this a target after entering his first event in Round 7. He stated: “I’m delighted to be fortunate enough to win Series. I’ve really enjoyed competing all new courses with various distances. I’d like to congratulate all competitors and offer my sincere thanks to all volunteers & marshals that give up their time“.

Oswestry Paragon’s Morris took Silver and had some complementary words for Bedford: “Well done to Henri and all the other prize winners. I’m still a Junior next year so will try and get in a few more rounds. It’s been great to ride different courses. Thanks to everyone involved“. The final word was left to Junior Bronze medallist Sam Holwill, who added: “I’m pretty surprised but pleased to get third. I’m happy with how I’ve progressed in time trials this season and am looking forward to getting new personal bests next season“.
