Ludlow CC Scenic 10.

How much Sam Morris has improved was clearly on display as he took his second win in the 2018 SB Sports Injuries Series, knocking over two minutes off his previous attempt from 2016 at the tough Ludlow Scenic 10 course – whilst the Women’s Series was settled. Morris has only entered two rounds in but has seen big returns for his efforts, taking the maximum 20 points in Round 15 at Long Meadowend. The Revolutions Racing rider stopped the watch on 23 minutes 6 seconds, improving by 2:02 from 2016, the last time he rode this most technical of circuits, with rider’s times routinely down 2-3 minutes on normal.

The 18 year-old, in his first season as a Senior saw off the attentions of Wrekinsport’s Chris Halford by 59 seconds, showing the strength of his ride with Halford no slouch. Morris was delighted with his trip out to the south of the County, stating: “I had a really good ride. This was the first time I had touched the time trial bike since the SCCA 100 a month ago so I wasn’t too sure what to expect. Luckily it went pretty well! A real fun course that, with some great climbs and fun descents“. Morris’ comments echo many rider’s sentiments when faced with the swooping, twisting terrain that makes up much of this course – the sheer exhilaration and fun of something deliberately designed to be everything a time triallist normally doesn’t want.

With Veteran’s Silver in his sights and a potential challenge for Overall Bronze too Chris Halford was getting his first experience of the course – and found his normal 60-tooth front chain ring to be a distinct disadvantage. Halford added 18 points to his Overall tally for taking runner-up spot, moving to within 10 points of the Bronze medal thanks to his 24:05 effort – and took the maximum 20 points in the Veteran’s competition to stretch his advantage to 48 points in his quest for that Silver medal thanks to a fine Veteran’s Standard of +2:22. He commented: “An interesting course, even if I was a little over geared! Definitely one I want to ride again. A great time by Sam“.

Whilst Halford has his sights set on Overall Bronze the Silver medal was sealed on the night by Nova Raiders’ Ed Middleton, who took the runners-up spot behind Ian Nisbett, who won SB Series Gold in the previous round at Hawkstone. Middleton was  generous with his comments, stating: “I’ve enjoyed racing this Series and I’m more than happy to come second to Ian, who had a great year. Thanks to everyone who helped make the season happen“!

Whilst Halford was getting his first taste of the circuit Middleton’s team mate Tim Beardmore is well aware of the challenge on offer being an annual visitor. Beardmore put in a strong ride, 45 seconds off Halford’s pace in 24:50 to finish 3rd Overall and second Veteran with +1:37 to push Ludlow Brewery RT rider Steve Minton out by 20 seconds. Beardmore is in a good vein of form having missed the first few months of the season and clearly enjoyed his evening: “I really enjoy this course, even if it doesn’t really suit me due to its hilly nature. I went out hard and tried to hang on. I’m pleased with both my time and power. I feel like I’m starting to find some form having missed most of the year with a knee injury, so I’m hoping for a strong finish to the season. A top ride by Sam Morris to take the win, with an amazing time. Thanks to all at Ludlow CC for hosting“.

Local riders made up the Women’s field with 17 year-old Hanna Lancaster posting a fine attempt of 27:59 to beat Emily Hinton by 2:07, with both riders making their first appearances in the Series. Lancaster took a good haul of 18 points in the Junior Championship too with another first time local William Hints taking the win in 26:13 – good enough for 7th spot Overall. Lancaster was delighted with a personal best, commenting: “The Scenic 10 is one of my favourite courses as I enjoy the hills, and I was pleased to have recorded a PB“.

Nova Raiders had a good evening with Charlotte Chapman sealing the Women’s Series as she is no longer able to be caught. Chapman had opened up a 76 point advantage before this event and with just 80 points available pre-race was a shoo-in to win the Women’s title. She was delighted to win Gold in a Series she has targeted this year, never having won an SB Series medal previously. She stated: “I’m really chuffed to get the Series Gold. I’ve really enjoyed time trialling this season, I’ve had loads of fun and I don’t see this stopping anytime soon! I have to thank the fantastic team that is Nova, which I love being part of, and of course a massive thank you to everyone who gave up their time this year so I could ride my bike – and sometimes quite fast“!
