North Shropshire Wheelers Hawkstone 10.

Records tumbled and Series Gold was sealed in Round 14 of The SB Sports Injuries Series, North Shropshire Wheelers’ Hawkstone 10. Ian Nisbett set a new course record on his way to taking that Gold medal to add to the Veteran’s Gold he won in Round 13. The Hafren CC rider set a fabulous time of 23 minutes 51 seconds beating Richard Kay’s previous mark set in the only previous event utilising this tough circuit by 14 seconds – with Kay himself beating his previous best by 11 seconds to take the runner-up spot.

With very different characteristics to a normal 10 mile time trial the course record reflects the lumpy circuit, which includes 474 feet of climbing and a number of technical sections. Nisbett was delighted to double-up on Championship Gold, which has seen him travel around the County to take on the challenges of courses with very different characteristics, although he indicated that a long season had taken its toll: “Obviously I’m very pleased to capture the Overall win to go with the Veterans Series. It is well beyond my expectations from the start of the season. It’s started to feel like a long season recently, and my performance has started to drop off – so a welcome boost. Another new course for me, certainly a challenging parcours, and harder than I was expecting. At the time I hated it, but in hindsight I’m warming to it! Definitely a change to the usual 10 mile time trial, and one where, once you have a few rides under your belt, you could refine your effort and gain time at certain points“. Nisbett also showed off exactly why he is Veteran’s Champion too, winning this event with a fine +2:32.

Kay meanwhile was pleased to lower his course best despite missing out on the win by four seconds and was well aware of the challenge laying ahead of him pre-race. His 23:54 was helped by warm, calm conditions as he also took the runners-up spot in the Veterans with +2:19. He stated: “A course personal best is always good, although there were numerous sections where I was not on the money! A great win by Ian considering it was his first time around. Thanks to my Club for organising a truly original 10 mile time trial. Great stuff“!

After taking maximum points in Round 11 Tom Richardson had to settle for third spot with a solid 24:46. The Oswestry Paragon rider was making a rare foray south and enjoyed his evening out, commenting: “Having never ridden the course before I enjoyed the challenging course, well marshalled and supportive on the way around. I gave it my best effort so happy with third“. Meanwhile in the Veterans it was a newly signed-up Nova Raider who made an immediate impact with Dean Dovey finishing third Veteran in +1:35 and taking 4th Overall in 25:24. Riding his first SCCA event Dovey was impressed by the course and the organisation, stating: “North Shropshire Wheelers where a very friendly bunch both before and after the race. The course was harder than expected but I enjoyed it on another warm evening. I loved the last stretch of smooth tarmac“.

Nisbett wasn’t the only rider setting course records with Dovey’s team mate Charlotte Chapman setting the Women’s benchmark and finishing a superb equal 5th Overall. Chapman stopped the watch on 25:45 just 24 hours after setting a personal best and knew she had been in a race: “That was very hard work after a PB ride the night before – I did my fastest ever 10 the night before my slowest ever! But I’m very happy to take the course record on such a toughie, I want to have a real crack at it now on fresh legs“! Chapman stretched her lead at the top of the Women’s Championship to open up a huge gap of 76 points in the only SB Championship yet to be decided.

But the course records weren’t finished there with SB Junior Champion Henri Bedford setting the Junior standard with a fine effort of 26:18. Bedford was a little taken aback by the technical challenge presented and indicated that he could have gone harder: “A new course that I found challenging, I was overly cautious on my braking around the corners. Looking forward to next time to be more positive. Many thanks to North Shropshire Wheelers for organising and marshalling the event“.
