Home advantage paid dividends for Bryn Davies as the leader of both the Friction Hydraulics Series and Veteran’s Championship stretched his lead in both competitions in Round 14 at Arddleen. Davies coped with both strong winds hampering riders on the longer ‘out’ leg as well as unusual traffic hold-ups on a course noted for low volumes in the Oswestry Paragon CC 10. The Hafren CC rider was the only rider to dip below 22 minutes with a fine 21:55 effort which converted to a +4:23 Veteran’s Standard.

Davies wasn’t anticipating winning after getting stuck behind traffic twice, but was pleased to extend his Overall lead to 25 points over Victor Chetta and his Veteran’s lead to 30 points over Stuart Proctor, commenting: “It was a bit windy but the traffic was the biggest obstacle. I felt good going ‘out’ but got stuck in traffic and had to sit up. I was making up good time on the return but got caught in traffic again. Surprised to get the win considering the hold-ups so pretty happy with the result“.

Davies’ nearest challenge Overall came from Nova Raider Matt Gibbons, who had the disadvantage of the previous evening’s 2-Up in his legs. Despite this Gibbons posted an excellent ride of 22:17 to push SCCA Private Member Alex Leek into third spot a further nine seconds back. Gibbons confirmed he was happy with his ride in his post-race comments, stating: “I was pleased with the result and worked well on the outward leg despite conditions. Well done to Bryn, and thanks to the organisers“. Leek added: “I’m pleased with my time considering the windy conditions, the drag up to the turn was a grovel and really sapped the speed. Thanks to Helen Tudor and the timekeepers and marshals for running the event“.

Despite this result things are still close in the Veterans with Stuart Proctor strengthening his grasp on the Silver medal position with a +4:09 to seal Veteran’s runner-up on the night. Proctor revealed that he didn’t find the race easy due to the prevailing conditions and feeling under the weather himself: “Wow, what an evening, traffic and evil winds! I didn’t feel 100% at the start and struggled to really find my rhythm for this round, so I’m more than happy with the result“!

Proctor wasn’t the only one feeling under-par with Mid Shropshire Wheelers’ Andy Hazell taking third Veteran in only his second event of the Series. Hazell set a good mark of +3:51, just beating Gary Duncan by five seconds and said: “I didn’t feel great on what was a tough night, so I was pleased with the result“.

In the Women’s Series Pauline Hughes has already captured Gold and showed what a worthy winner she is with another fine win of 25:30, 18 seconds ahead of Duncan’s Paramount CRT team mate Ceris Eslava. Hughes didn’t enjoy the conditions however as she revealed: “It was a bit scary in the windy conditions. I was held up in traffic, but otherwise pleased. Well done all on a tough night“. Eslava meanwhile set a good time of 25:48, with her comments echoing Hughes’ sentiments: “I was pleased with the result despite scary conditions with the cross wind and traffic. Well done to all other women’s, close competition“!

There’s obviously something in the genes as Hazell’s daughter Jenny Newton took 3rd spot in the Women’s with a fine effort of 26:09 to push out reigning Friction Women’s Champion Jenny York by 34 seconds. Newton has been getting faster and faster as the season has progressed and is delighted with her form. She commented: “It was really tough out but I kept pushing in the hope for an easier return. Surprised but very happy with the result. Well done all women“.
