All the Overall Series medals as well as the Veteran’s Series medals were settled in the 15th and penultimate round of The Friction Hydraulics Series, with Bryn Davies adding another Championship to his tally. The Hafren CC rider has had a sublime season, adding his third County Championship to join The SB Sports Injuries Series Championship and The Coaching Revolutions 2-Up Series Championship on the mantelpiece. Davies showed his dominant form by taking another win in the North Shropshire Wheelers’ 25 at Prees by nine seconds from Nova Raiders’ Matt Gibbons with a fabulous 55 minute 52 effort.

Davies’ ride wasn’t without issues however, as he explained: “I couldn’t be happier with the result and in sealing the Series Gold, it’s been a great competition and season for myself. However, I felt it a bit only coming back off holiday late on Friday, and got held up at Tilstock coming to a dead stop so pleased enough with the time considering. I nearly abandoned the ride though before the Prees roundabout as my front mechanism was rattling around loose. I decided to carry on whilst crossing my fingers it would hold together, it was on the end of the thread on finishing, barely attached, it was somewhat distracting on the ride as I was aware of it rattling around and was expecting it to come off any minute! Thanks to everyone for a great morning’s racing“.

The 60 points Davies added to his tally meant Victor Chetta could no longer overtake him, though with Stuart Proctor finishing 4th with a fine 56:33 just eight seconds behind Richard Kay that set the medal positions in stone. Silver medallist Chetta commented: “I’ve learnt a lot in 2017 and will do less short local events in 2018 to focus on National Long Distance and British Best All Rounder goals. Time for winter training soon“.

Proctor was delighted not only to take Overall Bronze, his winning effort of +11:29 in the Veterans sealed that Series for him ahead of Davies too after a tough season-long tussle between the pair. When told he had won Veteran’s Gold his reaction was typically ebullient: “Just wow, awesome! It was another lovely morning to be out racing, although I felt really tired having raced in the UCI World Amateur TT in southern France three days before and spent 16 hours driving back home again! I was really pleased to get first Veteran on the day, and over the moon to get Veterans Gold in my first full season of time trialling – and Bronze overall too! Well done to Bryn and Victor for Gold and Silver overall, and to Matt for keeping us on our toes all season“.

Gibbons finished fourth Overall in the Series after a late start and is sure to be a tough cookie to crumble in 2018. He was pleased with his runner-up spot on the day and had kind words for the medallists, commenting: “My legs really felt it, although the result made it worthwhile. Well done to Bryn, Victor and Stuart on the overall positions“. Gibbons’ 56:01 just beat a strong challenge from the promoting club’s Richard Kay, who finished third on the morning in 56:25. He stated: “I gave it everything on what felt like a fast day. A great event as always from my club. Well done Bryn and Matt, a tremendous season for both“.

Pauline Hughes showed what a worthy Women’s Champion she is by leading the field home with an excellent ride of 1:04:47. Hughes’ closest challenger was Mid Shropshire Wheelers’ Jenny York, the 2016 Women’s Champion with a fine 1:07:14. But Hughes wasn’t finished there, with the +9:36 Veterans Standard seeing her take 5th Veteran’s position on the day and sealing Veterans Bronze too. Hughes commented: “It has been a fantastic season for me. I’m now feeling a bit tired, but I’m absolutely chuffed to bits with Veterans Bronze“.

With Proctor taking the Veterans win and Davies third spot with +10:59 sandwiched in between was another North Shropshire Wheeler David Wilson – who set a personal best 1:05:50 on actual doing so. Wilson is another newer rider making an impact, with his +11:09 just 20 seconds off Proctor’s benchmark. He stated: “It was a nice surprise to know that I was second Veteran. It was a near perfect morning for the event weather wise. I am only in my second season and I still have a lot to learn. It was the first time that I have done under 66 minutes for a 25 mile so I am very pleased. I will have to aim for a sub ’65’ next“!

Sam Morris has already wrapped up the Junior Friction Series and put in a strong ride for 7th Overall with a fabulous 58:14. However there are still two Junior medals to settle in the final round at Cherrington on 23rd September with William Hints, Kieran Morris and Matty Redworth the names in the frame in a ‘perm any two from three’ challenge.
