By his standards Bryn Davies had a relatively quiet evening in Round 12 of the SB Sports Injuries Series but he did enough to seal the Series despite finishing third on the night. The Hafren CC rider played things cautiously due to a slippery surface still wet thanks to fresh rain with an effort of 24 minutes 29 seconds – well down on his normal standards.

Ludlow CC’s Scenic 10 offers a unique perspective on time trialling with the Long Meadowend course swooping through the occasional beautiful village offering a stern technical workout with riders usually 2-3 minutes down on normal. Davies was delighted to seal the Overall Series, stating: “I enjoyed the night’s racing and was lucky to avoid the rain. I didn’t push hard enough on the hills on the way out and was a bit cautious on the bends in the wet. A little disappointed with my time in the end, slower than last year but still a good night’s racing, well done all and thanks to organisers for putting it on“. Davies also has a commanding lead of 76 points in the Veteran’s Series but with just a maximum 80 points available from the four remaining rounds looks a racing certainty to seal that Series too.

Local knowledge paid dividends for Steve Minton as the Ludlow Brewery RT rider made a winning debut in the SB Series with a fabulous ride of 24:02 – a personal course best. He wasn’t finished there either, capturing the Veteran’s win with +2:30. Minton was almost put off by the weather but persevered, commenting: “I really didn’t fancy it on my ride out from Ludlow! I settled into the effort quickly and was very pleased to take a PB on the course“.

Sandwiched in between Minton and Davies was Stuart Proctor. The Revolutions Racing rider just pushed out Davies by three seconds with his 24:26 ride, occupying the same runner-up spot in the Veterans Series too with a fine +2:19, 30 seconds ahead of Davies when the age-related factor was applied. Proctor is an old hand at this course and despite backing off in the wet enjoyed his evening tremendously. He commented: “I’ve done the course a few times now and love it, it’s so different to anything else around! I was a few seconds down on my best time there, but was much more cautious tonight with the wet roads. I’m also getting used to a new set up on my bike! Thanks to all at Ludlow CC“.

Whilst Proctor has experience on the course his team mate Pauline Hughes was encountering it for the first time – and loved it. The only female to try her luck at this tough circuit, Hughes got the benefit of stretching her Women’s Series lead by a further 20 points to 28 points over Jenny Newton, crossing the line in 28:50. She stated: “My first time on the course and I really enjoyed it. I rode cautiously as it was wet and bit slippery, but a great, fun course with a bit of everything“!

Minton wasn’t the only rider from a Ludlow-based team to set a course personal best with Ludlow CC 17 year-old William Hints making his debut in the SB Series with a fine effort of 25:26 – good enough for fifth overall. The youngster has improved greatly this year thanks to coaching, as he explained: “I am really pleased with this result being over 2:20 minutes faster than this time last year. I would like to thank Jonty Williams of Spot On Coaching and Gary Walters of Ludlow Brewery Race Team for their support“.
