Josh Williams smashed his own 25 mile County record in testing conditions in Round 8 of the Friction Hydraulics Series, the Hafren CC 25. The Team Bottrill rider lopped 16 seconds off his April record set in the Round 3, the Mid Shropshire Wheelers 25 despite poor conditions at Berriew. Williams stormed around the course with a fabulous effort of 49 minutes 21 seconds despite having to ease off at times due to slippery roads, with driving rain putting off a third of the field from starting. Williams commented: “Conditions were not ideal to be honest but you just have to get on with it and get your head down. I took the roundabouts with extra caution. I definitely think that course has a 48 minute ride on it with the right weather. A great run event by Hafren CC, and also all the marshals too“.

Taking the County win Bryn Davies stretched his Series lead over Victor Chetta with a top ride of 54:41, beating the Mid Shropshire Wheeler by 54 seconds. But Davies wasn’t finished there, helping himself to the runner-up spot in the Veteran’s Series with an excellent +11:58. For once local knowledge did not pay off however, with Davies explaining: “I was pleased with the win, although second overall to a storming ride by Josh who is on a different level. I’m not sure home advantage helped as it was the first time on the course for me this year. Conditions weren’t good but I didn’t really notice until the last couple of miles when I lost visibility and took it fairly cautiously on the roundabouts. A good night’s racing with the biggest applause going to the marshals for standing out in the rain for the duration of the evening“.

Chetta saw off a strong challenge from Revolutions Racing’s Stuart Proctor to take County runner-up by 20 seconds with a personal best 55:35 ride, although Proctor narrowed the gap to Davies in the Veteran’s Series with a fine win of +14:26. Chetta commented: “I was cursing rain beforehand but once I got racing I didn’t mind so much, although I was surprised by the strength of the headwind after the Four Crosses turn“. Proctor also had trouble from Four Crosses, adding: “I started cramping at Four Crosses, which kept surfacing all the way back in, not helped by the slight nagging head wind! Yet another first time on a course, my ride felt great going out, the rain and temperature weren’t really that much of a problem. A County personal best for me; great course and hosting – thanks to all at Hafren“.

If Josh Williams put in one of the rides of the evening Becky Lewis put in the other with an incredible 5½ minute win in the Womens Series. Lewis finished 6th, clearly showing her strength with a fantastic effort of 58:07, with Womens Series leader Pauline Hughes runner-up in a very respectable 1:03:34. Hughes extended her lead at the top of the Womens standings as a result of her ride and has a huge 135 point advantage over Charlotte Chapman, though Lewis, who made a late entry to the Series is charging up the rankings with three wins from three events. She commented: “Hafren CC did a grand job of organising and marshalling. The course is super, and has potential for faster times in favourable conditions. The weather was unpleasant to say the least – well done to everyone who braved it! It was great to witness Josh breaking his own record on a Shropshire course“.
