Coaching Revolutions Shropshire Championship 10 presented by Paramount CRT

A winning streak continued for Matt Gibbons as the Nova Raider took Gold and The Gordon Davies Trophy in the Coaching Revolutions Shropshire Championship 10 presented by Paramount CRT in his first full season. Gibbons made the most of the super-smooth surface on the Nesscliffe bypass in the first solo event held on this course in eight years to post his second win in the Friction Hydraulics Series on the trot. A strong effort of 21 minutes 8 seconds saw Gibbons take a clear win of 18 seconds, as he led his club to Team Gold in the process. An ecstatic Gibbons stated: “I thought it would be a fast course and went for it from the off. I’m delighted to have won a trophy and medal in my first season of racing, I couldn’t be happier, thanks to Paramount CRT for a good race“.

Gibbons received strong backup from Scott Harris and Tim Beardmore to take Team Gold, based on a club’s fastest three riders in a combined 1:05:43, with Harris, Gibbons’ 2-Up partner claiming 4th spot in 21:57 and Beardmore 6th in 22:29. Gibbons added: “It’s great to be part of such a good team like The Nova Raiders, strong in numbers and everyone seems be improving all the time“. Harris also enjoyed his morning out stating: “A brilliant course, great marshalling and good points for all of the Raiders’ team. I wanted to go faster but I’m happy“. Beardmore concurred, adding: “My first ride on a great course. I’ve struggled a bit with my 10 pacing this season, and finished feeling I could have gone a out a bit harder. Another super strong team effort from the Raiders. I’m really happy to back up Matt and Scott for Team Gold. We will be aiming for the same in the 25 Championship“!

Gibbons’ nearest challenger was long-distance specialist Victor Chetta, who took Overall Silver with a fine effort of 21:26, just outpacing Hafren CC’s Bryn Davies by a single second. Despite taking that medal Chetta definitely has an eye on those longer events, stating: “A great course, though I’m glad to get my last 10 of season out of way and focus on the 12-hour on the 9th July“. Davies meanwhile made it a brace of Bronze medals with his 21:27 converting to a +4:46 in the Veterans’ Championship. He revealed that tiredness played it’s part: “My legs were a little tired and I went out to conservatively, leaving to much to do coming back. It was frustrating to be just one second behind Victor! However Matt put in a storming ride to take top spot, fair play to him. Thanks to Paramount for putting on a great event“.

Davies wasn’t the only rider picking up a brace of 10 Championship medals, with Pauline Hughes winning both the Women’s 10 Championship and The Gordon Davies Women’s Trophy as well as the Veteran’s Championship in +5:03 – though the former was by a narrow margin. Hughes dug deep to set a new personal best 24:11, pushing out Charlotte Chapman by just two seconds to take that Women’s Championship. A thrilled Hughes stated: “It was my first time on the course and I really liked it, I think my pacing was better. I did not expect the win, but am absolutely delighted with winning the trophy, and with a big new 10 mile personal best. An excellent event by Paramount“. Rising star Chapman is another rider in her first full season and was pleased to take Silver whilst having a few words for her team mate Gibbons: “I couldn’t seem to find my racing legs but still managed a decent ride. Well done to fellow Raider Matt for his amazing time“!

Challenging Hughes for the respective Championships were a pair of Paramount riders, with 2016’s Women’s 10 Champion Ceris Eslava taking Bronze this time with a fine effort of 25:12. Eslava commented: “I found it tough going out. I really liked the course, great results by all“. Meanwhile going one better in the Veterans’ Championship Gary Duncan posted an excellent +4:51 and was complementary about the course and promotion, stating: “It was nice to ride a nice smooth course in Shropshire! Well done Paramount CRT“.

Unexpectedly Hughes and Davies weren’t the only riders making it a double with Sam Morris not only taking the Junior 10 Championship with a great ride of 22:54, he also sealed the Friction Hydraulics Junior Series too. Morris’ effort was good enough for 9th spot overall, and despite lamenting a lack of youngsters willing to take him on Morris was not for easing up, stating: “It was a shame there was no more Junior competition, but I was happy with my overall place too. I felt like I’d had a bit of a shocker out on course so it was a pleasant surprise to break 23 on probably my new favourite course“.
