Coaching Revolutions Shropshire Championship 10 presented by Ludlow CC

A massive personal best won the day in the Coaching Revolutions Shropshire Championship 10 presented by Ludlow CC as Dean Callister took a big win in Round 11 of the Friction Hydraulics Series. The Nova Raider caused a huge upset to take The Gordon Davies Trophy and County 10 mile Gold with reigning champion Kirk Vickers out to defend that title, but Callister coped best with sopping wet conditions on his first sight of the Brimfield – Ludlow bypass course to come home in 20 minutes 26 seconds.

This was a brilliant 1:07 improvement with Callister making the best of a course known for personal bests with competition strong as two-thirds of the riders emulated him in lowering their benchmarks, making the most of the wet conditions known for allowing easier passage through the air and enhanced performances due to an oxygen-rich atmosphere. Callister wasn’t finished there either as he led his club to Team 10 Gold and back to the head of the Top Club Award standings on what turned out to be a vintage day for the Newport squad as he explained: “My first time on the course and I loved it. Conditions were wet when racing but the course was still fast. I was very pleased with my ride as it’s a new 10 PB for me. It was a great day for all the Nova Raiders team, taking Gold in Overall, Women’s, Veteran’s and Team. Thanks to all the time keepers and marshals for a great event“.

Callister was backed up in that Team victory by strong rides from Dean Dovey and Ed Middleton, helping the club to a 2:07 winning margin over Ludlow Brewery RT in a combined 1:03:49, with Dovey shaving 39 seconds off his benchmark to take 5th Overall in 21:40 and Middleton just one place and three seconds behind. Dovey was also gaining his first sight of the course and took to it like a duck to water – which was helpful given his experience at the start: “The heavens opened on the start line but it helped to keep cool. I am new to course and loved it, plus delighted at a great Team result. Thanks to all helpers and organisers“. Middleton added: “A fantastic day out for the Raiders. I’m proud to be the third rider home to gain the Team Gold, after PB’s by both Dean’s. Well done to all involved in putting on the event“.

Dovey’s involvement in the medals wasn’t finished there as he tied for third spot in the Veteran’s 10 Championship with Ludlow Brewery rider Steve Minton, with both posting a good Standard time of +5:27. Minton was broadly pleased with his effort in an otherwise largely fallow season, commenting: “Only my fourth competitive outing for my time trial bike this season so fairly pleased but thought it was a day when I might have done a PB! But still, a really enjoyable day, thanks Ludlow CC“.

Whilst Callister and his team mates were thrilled at a great day out the Silver and Bronze medallists weren’t so happy – but for quite different reasons. Taking the runner-up spot in 20:33 Wrekinsport’s Chris Halford knew he was on a good ride, but a hold-up about a mile from the finish cost him that vital eight seconds. Halford, in some of the best form of his life was left rueing what might have been as he came away from the event disappointed: “I was gutted, I got held up just before the S-bends and bridge, and at my age don’t think I’ll go that well again“. Halford also took the same medal in the Veteran’s Championship as he finished with an impressive Standard of +6:03.

Meanwhile defending champion Kirk Vickers had, by his high standards, a rare off day, taking the Bronze medal in 20:40. Vickers had won all three previous rounds he had entered so the standard of Callister’s and Halford’s rides was brought even more sharply into focus. He stated: “I struggled to turn the pedals, my power was down – it was just one of them days! Well done to the riders, some quick times being put out“.

As Callister indicated Nova took home Gold in both the Veteran’s and Women’s 10 Championships – and there’s no stopping Deb Hutson-Lumb as she repeated the feat from the Cyclotherapy Shropshire Championship 25 to take home an impressive brace. Hutson-Lumb beat Halford by just five seconds on Standard to record a fine +6:08 and also took captured The Gordon Davis Women’s Trophy thanks to a personal best 23:19 effort, chopping 19 seconds off her benchmark time. Despite this terrific haul Hutson-Lumb was a little disappointed not to go even faster but suffered similar issues to Halford. She stated: “I was hoping to dip under the 23 minute mark but got stuck behind traffic. Even so, I improved my time and very pleased with the wins. A great event, thank you Ludlow CC

Hutson-Lumb wasn’t the only female medallist to go home with a big PB as Alison Dockney captured Silver with a superb 24:16 – and it was that reduction that saw off the challenge from another Nova Raider, Jenny Newton who took Women’s 10 Bronze in 25:02. Dockney was the epitome of the ‘Over The Moon’ idiom post-race, commenting: “I’m so happy with this! I was super-excited and surprised by this result, a big PB by 58 seconds. I can’t believe it really, I was doing 27’s a few months ago! I can’t wait to get on that course again for the next 2-Up. I enjoyed the course, and a fast day despite the rain, lots of fantastic times so well done to everyone. Great signage and marshalling from Ludlow CC – thanks for hosting, and the post-race tea and cake was much appreciated“.

Newton meanwhile was also complementary about the event organisation and expressed satisfaction at taking Bronze in tricky personal conditions. She explained: “A crazy day for me, I had a virus, then I was so late I only had a 10 minute warm up then forgot my Garmin. I rode totally on feel, I really wanted to beat my course PB but didn’t. Still, a good time. Well done Deb and Alison as well as the rest of Nova for a great club winning day! An excellently marshalled event from start to finish“.
